Valentine was a powerful nephilim that formed the community of the Circle, being the leader. His aim was to get rid of all the demons and downwolders in this world, to clean it from their existences.

He is the former husband of Jocelyn Fairchild and the father of Jonathan Christopher Morgenstern and Clary Fairchild.

Back when the Circle was an active community he experimented with demon blood. First on himself, but soon also on other people and also on his unborn child Jonathan, while he was still in the womb of Jocelyn.

As Jocelyn had enough of the experiments she took the chance and ran away from her husband, while being pregnant. She left her son and husband and took the stolen Mortal Cup with her. Valentine faked their death by setting their family house on fire and took the identity of Michael Wayland.

As Michael Wayland he raised Jace until he faked his death again, right in front of the eyes of the ten-year-old Jace. Valentine arranged that the Lightwoods would take Jace in, knowing they would take good care of him.
