Raphael was born in Mexico in 1937. He grew up with his mother and several siblings in Mexico. When he was younger, they moved to New York. He was raised a good catholic and even carried on with his belief, when he got turned into a vampire in 1953.

In 1953 there were rumours going around about vampires kidnapping mundanes, so he and some of his friends went to Hotel Dumort to kill those vampires. He got bitten by Louis Karstein and turned into a vampire. Soon after ending his mundane life he killed his sire and moved into the Hotel, to keep his family save and hide the fact, that he isnt't aging anymore.

Soon after his transformation he became addicted to feeding from mundanes, he lost his faith and belief. It was Magnus Bane who helped him regain it. Magnus turned out to be a father-figure for the young vampire.

In the show he also has a younger sister called Rosa. She was his last living relative. In times when she became homesick, Raphael brought her up to roof. He told her to look up at those stars, they were the same like in Mexico and she's not too far from home. Over the years Rosa developed demantia and she lived in a catholic retirement home, forgetting about her family, so she also forgot what her older brother looks like. Raphael often visited her and brought her food. Rosa's memory of her brother only consists of the fact, that he disappeared and never even said good-bye. When she died, Raphael couldn't even go to the funeral, because it was during the day.

Appereance is always very important for Raphael. He is well dressed and he's very authoric. But he's also very ambitious and cunning. Overall he seems to be emotionally cold, but deep down he is very warm-hearted and caring for the people he loved, just like his family, the clan, Isabelle and Magnus.

Raphael is asexual and not interested in sexual relationships. Nevertheless he still experiences romantic feelings and finds them worth pursuring.

At the end of the show Raphael turned back to a mundane due to the experiments by Viktor Aldertree in the project "Heavenly Fire". In the books, he dies. (But we're definitely not talking about Raphael dying now...)
