Victor was the former head of the Clave's scientific development and head of the New York Institute. At first, he used to be a field medic, before he eventually climbed up the ranks and became a diplomat. Aldertree fell in love with a werewolf named Eva.One day when she turned and attacked Victor, he had to kill her with his blade. From then on, he came to see Downworlders differently.

Shortly after this incident, Aldertree initiated Project Heavenly Fire which involved subjecting unwilling Downworlders to torturous experimentation with heavenly fire, and develop a serum that would turn Downworlders into mundanes.

The Clave sent Aldertree as a replacement for then interim head of the Institute. Aldertree initiated an investigation of all the Shadowhunters who had gone on missions with Jace and put the Institute on lockdown. At the end, Aldertree deduced that Jace was a traitor and launched a hunt and kill order for Jace.

Victor then summoned Raphael Santiago for an investigation relating to the unrest among vampires in the city. Though Raphael truly did not know of Camille's whereabouts and was trying to find her. Aldertree was not sure and tricked Raphael and bound him to a chair, and began to torture him.

Aldertree interrogated Jace at the Silent City. Before he could leave, Valentine infiltrated the City to steal the Soul-Sword and he was held at knife point as leverage against Jace. Jace decided to save Aldertree, allowing Valentine to escape with the Sword.

After losing his position as head of the New York Institute, Aldertree was appointed as Head of Scientific Development. By then, Aldertree had been working on Project Heavenly Fire for years. Their test subjects was taken from prisoners of the Gard. Thomas Greenlaw was killed to keep the project hidden,but, Isabelle found a data chip in his stomach and got hold of a list of prisoners.

With renewed motivation, Isabelle restarted her investigation into it with Aline Penhallow. Isabelle called him, and Aldertree immediately arranged to have dinner with her. Helen alerted him about a Downworlder in contact with someone. When he saw that it was Simon Lewis, he immediately suspected Isabelle.

Helen helped Simon and Raphael in destroying the rest of the heavenly fire serums. Aline, who learned about his plans, alerted her mother. Aline later returned with reinforcements and had Aldertree put under arrest. For his crimes against the Accords, Aldertree was prosecuted,and locked up in the Gard.
