Oh yes, the Steel Ball Run race. A race with high risk, but with a high reward. Many people wished to be a part of it, swearing that they will win. Some were in for the money, some for the fame; others were for the chicks, etc., etc. Yet you didn't join for any of those reasons. You didn't need it – you were perfectly satisfied with your physical wealth. There was only one thing you lacked in your life right now and it was exciting.

Back home it was the same every day – you would get up, tend to your father and the farm, make dinner and go to sleep again. Each day offered the same as the last and by now you couldn't even understand if the day has passed at all or if you imagined it.

And when the Steel Ball Run race was announced, you didn't even think twice about joining it. Without a second word to your father, you jumped on your horse and ran off. If your father had known where you were heading, he would've tried to stop you. After all the race was not a place for women. Of you was expected to stay in the farm, or the kitchen, take care of your family and provide dinner. And you hated it. The only thing you wanted was excitement. Something to do.

The Steel Ball Run race was your savior. It opened so many new opportunities for you. You were able to see so many new places, meet so many new people. Even if most people you met in the race weren't friendly at all, you still counted that as an experience and possible friendship in the future if you were to encounter them again.

Not only that, but you had learned that there was more to this world – something beyond the human's power. A concept that others have called a 'stand'. You didn't possess one of those, nor have you seen any others, but you had heard about them. Once you may have 'accidentally' eavesdropped on some famous jockey talking about them.

Either way, the race was wonderful. And tiring. You had just reached the next checkpoint, a small town, where seemingly everyone else from the SBR race has settled for the night. It was quite cold and as much as you wished to get a room in a warm inn, you doubted there would be any free places. Hell, there were even people setting up tents in the streets.

Jumping off your horse, you looked around. Once you found what you were looking for, you headed for the stable. Clearly many of the people participating felt safer if their horses were tied to the house they were staying at, rather than the stable. Perhaps they thought it would give them a better start tomorrow. You planned on sleeping next to your horse, once again.

When you entered the stable, you noted the lack of light – there was not a single lantern lit on. So you did what was best and lit one up, holding it with one hand. With the other, you held your horse's reins. Tugging them gently, you urged the animal to follow you to an empty space. Once you were done setting things up, you decided to stop by an inn to eat something before laying down to sleep.

Just as you were about to turn around, you heard someone curse and then a dull [thump]. Turning around, you noted the sound came from the entrance. There stood a white horse, with no rider on it. As soon as it saw you, the horse decided that getting close to you was a good idea. Of course, you were taken aback – there was a large horse without its master approaching you. It made you uneasy.

When it began its slow walk towards you, you couldn't help but notice the low sound, as if someone was dragging a bag of potatoes around. Once the horse was close enough to the light, you noticed someone tied up in the horse's reins, their lower body being dragged around. You let out a low gasp, putting down the lantern and running to their side. It must've hurt – being dragged around like that.

But when you finally untied them, you noticed two things. One, it was a man, as you should've assumed. And two, he didn't seem to be in pain. His whole legs were cut, yet you never saw even slight discomfort on his face.

"Thank you," he said simply.

Not soon after you figured out why he wasn't in pain – he couldn't feel his legs. You saw him drag himself using his upper body strength to rest against one of the pillars. You had left your lantern there.

Then you were able to fully examine him. he looked young – perhaps somewhere around your age. His golden hair was half-covered in blue cloth with a horseshoe on the front of it. He wore a simple blue coat and matching, slightly darker blue pants. He was truly a sight to you.

After a few moments of debating, you sat across from him and extended your arm.

"I'm (Y/N) (L/N)." Offering him a timid smile, you waited for his reply. For a second, he seemed taken aback as if he didn't expect you to actually be there. Then his eyes slowly traveled up to meet yours, before quickly shifting to your extended hand. Should he take it? What if you were an enemy? Either way, the uncertainty he was going through must have shown on his face, because you retrieved your hand back to your side.

"Sorry..." you said rubbing the side of your neck "I know what you're scared of. But I really don't want to stop you from the race. I was just offering help and perhaps friendship." You admitted.

Once again, you were met with no answer and instead – with his unmoving gaze. He kept looking at you the same way as before. It made you quite uneasy; you looked away.

God this was awkward. A roll of sweat ran down the side of your cheek. You'd decided enough was enough and stood up to leave the man alone. Just as you were about to turn away from him, his voice stopped you.

"I'm Johnny." His soft voice was as clear as a day to you. A little smile tugged at your lips. You looked at Johnny once again and offered your hand again.

"It's nice to meet you, Johnny. I believe we could be good friends."
