The rest of dinner went better than I thought. I didn’t say much, I let everyone else do the talking. Landon talked a lot. Him and his sister told all these crazy stories about their parents and the divorce and their new mom. Jake and I could never talk about our parents like that. It’s not like we weren’t capable, but when we did talk about them, this dark cloud floated over our heads.
Hanna and Justice were friendly people. I thought we were gonna have some girls with bad attitudes as our competition, but I was wrong. After we were finished eating we were dismissed back to our rooms. We had a warm up day tomorrow at seven in the morning. Horrible timing really.
“I like those girls. I almost hate that we have to compete against them,” Bailey pouted as we left the dining room.
“But remember we are. No matter how nice they are, we still have to hit em hard,” Liz’s tough attitude never failed to make an appearance.
“And Landon… he was quite lovely too, don’t you think Lexi?” Tessa nudged my arm.
It felt like I had been in some sort of trance ever since my conversation with Landon.
“Well…” I chewed on my bottom lip, “he certainly wasn’t crazy.”
“He was certainly crazy hot, that’s for sure,” Bailey winked at me.
I scrunched up my nose at her and gripped the phone in my hand tighter.
“Before you guys go all good cop, bad cop on me upstairs, all we talked about was his parents. I guess he thought I could relate.”
“And could you?” Liz questioned.
All eyes were on me I just looked straight ahead.
“Not really. You heard how he was talking about all of them. My stories aren’t very pleasant all the time like his,” No one said anything.
I don’t know what I was waiting for, but there had to be something more they wanted to say.
“That’s all you talked about?”
There it was.
“This was the first time you had seen each other in years and he was crazy in love with you. Literally. What else did you talk about?” Bailey was becoming annoyingly eager to hear about everything.
“He asked me if I was still scared of him,” That question still threw me off guard.
It was something about the way he said it.
“Seriously? You weren’t ever scared of him were you?”
“No of course not. He thought I was. But I told him that I never was and that I’m not scared now. I don’t know how he did it, but he’s like a whole new person now. He was actually really sweet,” A small smile fell on my lips but I wiped it away before anyone noticed.
“That’s the first time I’ve heard you give me a compliment other than the day we met.”
The four of us now standing in front of an elevator, jumped at the sound of Landon’s voice.
I turned all the way around and took in the look on his face. He was leaning up against the wall with his arms crossed and a playful smirk sitting perfectly on his face.
“What can I say? You earned it today.”
God, I really hope my attempt to be normal around him didn’t sound like flirting.
“Well thank you. I’m touched. I didn’t mean to make you ladies miss your elevator but if I could just borrow one of you for a second,” He stood up straight and put his hands in his pockets.
“Go ahead,” Bailey shoved me forward and I glared at her.
“Actually, as much as I enjoy talking to you Lexi, I need to borrow Liz,” He fixed his eyes on her and she just stared back.
“Me?” she pointed to herself.
He nodded, still smirking.
“It’ll only take a minute or two,” He almost looked like he was begging.
Liz gave him a small nod and walked over to him.
“Plot twist,” Bailey whispered.
“At least it wasn’t me.”
Landon gave me this new feeling of nervousness.
“What do you think he’s talking to her about?” Tessa whispered.
“I have no idea. She seemed pretty calm when she went over there so hopefully nothing goes wrong,” I replied.
The estimate of how long their conversation would last was completely accurate. Just under two minutes later, Liz walked back over to us… with Landon by her side. Bailey, Tessa, and I just looked at her. She didn’t say anything, didn’t move, just stood there.
“Would you like to tell us what’s going on?” Bailey blurted.
“Uh… Landon invited us to a party,” She mumbled.
“You’re throwing a party?” I asked, looking at him.
“It’s not mine. I was just told to pass on the invitation,” He shrugged.
“Who would be stupid enough to throw a party the very first night, especially when we have to get up early tomorrow?” Bailey questioned.
“Some people from California I think,” He replied.
“Figures,” Liz rolled her eyes.
“Well why’d you have to ask Liz and not all of us together?” Tessa crossed her arms.
“Lexi isn’t the only one I remembered. Don’t forget I knew all of you. And one thing I remembered about Liz was that despite her attitude, she couldn’t resist acting stupid at a party,” He grinned.
It surprised me that he knew that. Liz was never what I’d call a “party girl”, but she did like parties more than the rest of us. In fact, she was really the only one who’d ever go to them, but she always made sure to keep her image clean. When she went, she’d make sure no one would label her as something that she’s not. Like a slutty party girl for example.
“Okay, I said this already, but those days are over. I haven’t been to a party in the longest time and tonight is not the night to attend one,” Liz stepped away from Landon and stood next to Bailey.
“Come on girls, just relax a little.”
Why did he even want us to come?
“What do you mean relax? We literally just got here. We haven’t done any hard work yet. Don’t you think we should be saving up our energy?” Liz’s competitiveness was showing.
“We’re at a performing arts competition. And performing arts is having fun, expressing yourself, and letting loose. Not staying in your room all night and thinking about every way you can win. That’s how you slow yourself down. Go out and have fun and you’ll have that much more fun when you perform.”
Landon had always been one for rants and after that speech, I could tell that hadn’t gone away.
“How poetic,” Liz stated sarcastically.
“Liz… he does kind of have a point,” Tessa muttered.
Liz looked at her, then Bailey and I. I hadn’t realized it, but I was wearing the same face as Tessa. The one that showed that maybe it wasn’t a horrible idea.
“You all are crazy. Where’s the party at?”
