I drove down the road towards the park. I saw my brother on the very other end and honked as loud as my car could. He snapped his head around, said bye to his friends, and sprinted over to the car.

“Took you long enough.” Jake said putting on his seatbelt.

“You could’ve run faster.” I said turning the car around.

“Well I’m sorry I can’t run as good as you can. I’m not on the cross country team or the track team.” Jake said.

Yeah, that’s what else I do. I run. Most girls would find it… not fun. I didn’t either. My dad made me do it. Not Kenneth, my real dad. Me and my brother were with him one time and he told me I should join the cross country team.

Eventually, after I never signed up, he signed me up and I had no choice. After the first couple runs, I actually started to like it. So then I joined a track team. But dance is still my favorite. I drove as fast as I could without going over the limit and finally pulled into the driveway at our house. I sat back in my seat and let out a big breath of air.

“Alex, no time to relax. Kenneth’s coming down the street.” Jake said looking at the rearview mirrors.

“Are you freakin’ serious?!”I grumbled.

We both scrambled out of the car and ran up to the front door. I grabbed my keys and tried to jam it into the lock.

“C’mon!” Jake rushed me.

“I’m trying!” I said.

Luckily we live at the very end of the street. The key finally went in and I turned it. We ran inside and right as I shut the door, Kenneth pulled into the driveway.

“That was close.” Jake said.

“Too close. Turn on some video game or something. Act natural.” I said.

Jake hurried and turned on a video game and started playing. I grabbed one of my magazines off the table and sat down on the couch, criss cross, and opened to a random page. Then, about 5 seconds later Kenneth and mom walked in.

I turned my head to look at them and smiled at my mom.

“Hey mom.” I said.

“Hey sweetie.” My mom said. She came over behind the couch and kissed the top of my head. Luckily my hair had dried when Jacob and I were at the beach, an advantage of living it Texas. Then she went around the couch and stood behind Jake.

“Please tell me you haven’t been doing that all day.” My mom said.

“No mother. I have not.” Jake said sarcastically.

My mom smiled her beautiful smile and kissed Jake on the top of his head. My mom had to be the best person in the entire world. You know how she kissed us both on the top of our heads like we were 6? It’s a family thing. Every day after she came home from work, she’d give us a kiss. Even if we were asleep. My dad would do the same. Every time he sees us he gives us a kiss.

“You both need to go take a shower.” Kenneth said.

Jake and I rolled our eyes and didn’t move.

“Now.” Kenneth said. He acted like he was talking to kids in preschool.

“Kenneth we can take showers when we want. We’re not 5.” I said.

“You sure act like it.” Kenneth snapped.

“Really? Are you sure it’s us, who act like 5 year olds?” Jake snapped.

“Jake.” My mom said.

“What?” He asked innocently.

My mom shook her head and Jake turned back to the T.V.
