“I can’t believe it! Does that mean we get to go?” Bailey asked.

“Yeah!” I yelled, I got up and closed my door before Kenneth could come give me a lecture.

“We get to go to Dallas! We get to go to Dallas!” Bailey sang.

Believe it or not, we live in Texas and none of us have ever been to the state's most famous city. Even though I couldn’t see her, I’m sure she was dancing around her room.

So what is so great about this envelope? Well inside are 4 tickets for all of us to go to Austin and be in this big show at the Birdsong theatre. Me and Tessa would dance, Bailey would sing, and Liz would act. We could all do a little bit of both, but we chose our strong suits. It was this contest we found online. We’d get more information once we got there.

“Guys, a letter came with it.” I said fishing through the rest of the big envelope.

“What’s it say?” Tessa asked.

“Dear girls from San Antonio, Texas, we are glad to say that your entries were some of the best in Texas. There are 4 other people from Dallas who are in the show. They are your competition. And since we know it will be a hard show, we have given you 2 extra tickets. See you girls next week.” I said.

We all got quiet.

“Competition? They never said anything about competition.” Liz blurted.

“Here’s what it says in the main things to know part. There will be a certain number of people chosen for this show from every state. At least two people will be chosen from the same city. And anyone else who was from a different city will be going against the other city.” I said.

“So we have to go against 4 other girls from Dallas? Great, just great.” Liz grumbled.

“Actually its 3 girls and one boy. See here’s how the show works, it says, each state will have its own half hour show and the audience will decide which 20 it likes best and those states will go onto the next level.” I said breathlessly.

If we were all together right now we’d be exchanging glances.

“Well that’s lovely.” Tessa said.

“I can’t believe that. They really didn’t tell us anything. I so would not have signed up for this if I knew this was how it worked.” Liz said.

“Don’t worry about it guys. We’ll do fine. But we have one week. Then we leave. We gotta get it together.” I said.

“Well what about school? Its only March, and we’ve had spring break already. How long will we be gone?” Tessa asked.

“Two weeks.  But they have a teacher come there and we get our school hours in that way.” I said.

“Like people on T.V do!” Bailey laughed.

“Well, Lexi, how is Kenneth gonna let you do this?” Liz asked me.

“I have no idea. But there’s always my mom. She actually loves and cares about me unlike Kenneth.” I grumbled.

I know I sounded mean, but not as much as him. I knew he didn’t care about me or Jake. Did he love my mom? I doubt it.

“You guys wanna go out for pizza and celebrate tonight?” Liz asked.

“I can’t. I already promised Jacob we’d hang out. I kinda owe him anyway.” I sighed.

“For what?” Bailey asked.

“I’ve been kinda Liz, to him lately.” I said.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Liz snapped.

“I mean I haven’t been as… nice to him lately. No offense.” I said.

“Eh, non taken.” Liz calmed down.

“Can we go out for pizza tomorrow night?” I asked.

“I can do that.” Bailey said.

“We have drill practice tomorrow.” Tessa said.

“We can go afterwards.” I said.

“Well I guess I’ll see you guys tomorrow.” Liz said.

“Bye.” We all said to each other.

I hung up and plugged my phone in to charge. Then I heard a car door slam and a car speed away. I looked outside my window and saw Kenneth driving away.

I went down stairs and saw Jake sitting on the couch grinning at his phone.

“Stella?” I asked.

Stella was this girl who he liked. They both liked each other but he won’t ask her out.

“Yeah.” He said.

As you can see Jake and I are super close. We tell each other everything partially because half the time, neither of us cared what the other had to say. But mainly because we were both really good at keeping secrets, and our mom worked all the time. So basically, it was only us in the house most of the time.

 “Where’s Kenneth going?” I said.

“Who cares? He said he needed some alone time because the world was stressing him out. He really means us.” Jake said.

“You have anywhere you wanna go?” I asked pulling my keys out of my pocket.

He grinned up at me.

“Gateway Park, the guys are having a football game up there.” He said.

“Go get shoes on then. Hurry up.” I smiled.

He ran upstairs and I pulled my phone out. I called Jacob and waited for an answer.

“Hey.” He said happily.

“Hey. How about we just sneak out now?” I asked.

“What about Kenneth?” Jacob asked.

See how much this man ruined my life?

“He’s in one of those, I hate my step kids with all my heart, moods. He took a drive, hopefully off a cliff. You wanna meet me at the lake?” I asked.

“Yeah.” He said.

“I gotta drop Jake off and I’ll be there in like 10 minutes ok?” I said.

“Take your time.” He said.

I made a small quick laugh and hung up the phone. I knew he was happy. And I was, too. We hadn’t spent much time together in the last couple weeks. We were both always busy. I was glad he actually cared about me that much, it made me wanna be with him even more. Jake came down stairs and we walked out the door and got in my car. I always felt a weight off my shoulders when we left this house.

Relationships are put to the test in the next chapter. And not just between Jacob and Lexi. I know this chapter isn't very good, I wrote it awhile ago and I think my writing skills have improved since then. But thanks for reading and please comment to let me know what you think!!
