'we have to go to the great hall' draco said, breaking out into a run and dragging me with him. 'we can't, you'll get in trouble, you're supposed to be going to your father and the other death eaters' i protested, digging my heels in and trying to drag draco the other way. he stopped, rolling his eyes and swiftly picking me up and hanging me over his shoulder like a sand bag or a potato sack. romantic. 'i'm not risking it, not now we've let potter go twice. they might hurt you'. he started running again, putting me down once we reached the crowd of students and instructing me to 'blend'. i reaches my hand up instinctively to my face, rubbing at my cheekbone before mentally face palming myself. he obviously didn't mean my makeup.

we walked in the great hall, pushing our way through the crowds and trying our best to look as average as possible. they had no reason to suspect we shouldn't be there. draco linked his fingers through mine, clearly ensuring we didn't get separated. 'it is clear we have an intruder in the castle' snape announced, looking across the hall 'this intruder, is harry potter. we aren't sure how he has gotten past the security, but if you are aware of his whereabouts you are to inform us immediately'. i froze, hoping harry would have had the good sense to get far away from here by now. 'it seems your castles security might need vastly improving' a voice rang out. fucks sake. a girl at the back of the hall screamed, momentarily distracting everyone and i whipped my head around to look. 'what's she screaming at?' i asked draco confused, then i heard it too.

students of hogwarts, i know that you are hiding harry potter in your castle. hand him over to me, and you will not be hurt. hand him over to me, and i will not burn your castle to the ground. you have until midnight.

i froze, turning to look at draco wide eyed. gasping when i seen snape had raised his wand towards harry. he opened his mouth, about to cast a spell when mcgonagall shoved her way in front of harry, firing at snape. i watched open mouthed as snape blasted backwards out of the great hall, smashing through the wall. i glanced over at harry, seeing his hand was resting on ginny as though he'd been about to push her out of the way. he caught my eye for a second, before turning and starting to push his way out of the great hall. i followed him instinctively, feeling draco pushing his way through the crowd after me.

we reached the courtyard, looking across at the chaos that was already reigning. ginny and neville were fighting off a giant to our right, trying to avoid the wall crashing down around them. to our left a large crowd of students were gathering. some of them bravely fighting off groups of death eaters, others crying and comforting each other, and a select few were attempting to hide; pressing themselves against the wall or behind pillars. 'y/n!' i whipped my head around, seeing hermione flying down the steps towards me, with ron in tow. 'where's harry?' i asked, hugging hermione tightly when she reached me. i released hermione, wrapping my arms around ron's neck. i pulled away, seeing hermiones face. 'he's not here?' she bit her lip, scanning across the courtyard. her eyes grew wider the longer she looked, and i saw ron gradually paling too. 'i'm sure he's fine' draco spoke up, surprising me 'potter knows how to take care of himself'. i smiled at him gratefully, reaching over to squeeze his hand. 'we should go help fight' i said gently, trying to prompt hermione and ron back into action. 'i'll go help ginny and neville, you help fight with the students' ron gave hermione a small smile, hesitating before reaching over and pecking hermione's cheek. 'be careful okay?' he added, and hermione flushed in spite of herself, nodding and peeling off towards the students. i looked at them properly for the first time, taking in the rumpled clothes and remembering the way they ran down the stairs hand in hand, blushing and smiling slightly. so much for trying to prompt them into action, they'd clearly had enough.

i looked over at the students hermione had gone to help, seeing how badly the death eaters were overpowering them. between ron, ginny and neville, they were just managing to hold off the giant, but hermione was quite obviously in desperate need of help. 'we need to help them' i tugged on draco's sleeve urgently, starting towards them until he pulled me back with a jolt. 'y/n, we can't fight against the death eaters. we're going to get in trouble just because we're not fighting with them right now, if we fight against them we've basically signed our lives away' he reminded me gently, and reality hit me with a crash. it had been so scarily easy to forget that draco was a death eater since we'd reached the great hall, everything had moved so fast i'd barely really had a moment to stop and think. 'we have to do something' i frowned, seeing the group of students getting closer and closer to the wall. 'what if-' draco started before gasping half way through, doubling over in pain and grabbing his arm. he hissed, his knees giving out under him and dropping to the floor. 'draco?' i said desperately, squatting next to him and touching his shoulder. 'draco what's wrong?' he looked up at me, his eyes filled with tears. 'something's happened' he gasped, the colour draining from his face. 'what is it?' i demanded, the worry noticeable in my voice. i put my hand over his, on his arm where the dark mark is. he moved his hand slightly, and i saw the tattoo was tinged bright red. i put my hand on it, making draco gasp in pain and me pull my hand back in shock. it was burning hot. 'i don't know, i just know he's calling the death eaters to retreat from the castle'. i looked away from draco, seeing he was right. the death eaters had stopped firing spells at the students, and were starting to walk back towards the entrance of the castle. it was in the brink of time, half of the students were on the floor and another quarter had had to stop fighting the death eaters to attend to the injured. hermione had been single handedly keeping them alive. draco wiped the sweat of his eyebrow, letting out a shaky breath. 'it's stopped. i don't know why, but it's stopped'. i hugged him before pulling his arm up and kissing the mark tentatively. he smiled at me, allowing me to peck him on the lips and gently help him to his feet. 'what now?' i asked 'do you think they've really given up?'. draco gave an almost imperceptible shake of the head, wrapping his arm around my shoulder. 'get ready for round two?' he laughed shakily, but something told me it wasn't a joke.
