"Are you going home for Christmas, Adela?"
"I'm not sure, Hermoine. My parents have been so busy in the muggle world, I'd doubt they'd even notice I was home."
November had come and gone. December had taken its place in Hogwarts. There was only a week left until Christmas. Which meant the Yule Ball was coming up.
"Well, has Cedric asked you to the Yule Ball yet?" Hermoine sympathized.
"No...actually he hasn't. Do you think he ever will?" I started to worry about where I stood with Cedric. Our relationship was deep into a rough patch.
"Seeing as you two haven't spoken in days, I think you have to assume the worst. Or maybe you could just talk to him."
I wasn't in the mood to fix what I hadn't broken. It wasn't me who distanced from Cedric. He had stopped speaking to me. I felt like I wasn't enough for him. After all, he was Hogwarts' heartthrob. He could easily pick any girl from school and no doubt she'd fancy him.
"Moine, I really can't. I don't want to face him. I'll only make myself feel worse." I said, hoping she would agree.
"Listen to me Adela, you have got to fix this one way or another. I know you like him. You can't just let this relationship go to waste because he's giving you the silent treatment. I won't stand for that. So go find him, he's probably in the library studying for his OWLS."
She had a point. So I went to the library to see what damage I could repair.
Cedric was sat next to a window on a dark oak desk, with a tiny lamp floating next to him illuminating the textbook he was studying. Two 5th year friends joined him. I gathered my thoughts and walked down the aisle to him.
His friends both turned up and looked at me. Cedric pretended not to notice. I cleared my throat in hopes of gaining his attention. His eyes were still glued to his book. The redheaded boy in front of me knocked on Cedric's arm and shot a glance back at me. He finally looked up.
"Cedric, look can we talk? I mean we haven't for days. You've been ignoring me like a pair of socks hidden behind your bed. Do you have anything to say to me at all?"
His eyes squinted and his face tensed."Look, Adela, you were great to me for the past month and a half, but I don't do long term crap like whatever it is you were expecting from me. C'mon how could I even want you after the countless times you refused to open up your legs. I'm not a prude, like you." His words were motivated with great force. They echoed through the rows of the library. The other two boys raised their eyebrows and laughed with each other, egging him on.
"I mean you really did think that you were good enough for me. What's a relationship without sex? At this point I'd just considered us good friends." The words pierced through my heart. My stomach dropped. "Let me just say this...You've been replaced. I've found someone else better. Someone who satiates my needs. And if you think that anyone will ever find you, a mudblood for Christ sakes, worthy of their love...you're in for a rude awakening. I hope you can understand how pathetic you really do make yourself."
Tears began to fill up in my eyes, only corroborating the fact that I did look pathetic. I had nothing left to tell him, he was a lost cause. His friends laughed and they all continued studying, going back to pretending I wasn't even there.
Then I noticed a pair of eyes that had been watching the confrontation go down. They were staring in between the bookshelves from the next row over. The piercing green eyes were recognizable to me. Draco had heard that entire thing. I walked past his row on my way out of the library and he couldn't help but look at me with remorse.
"Don't look at me like you even care about what happens to me anymore, Malfoy." I remarked.
He looked back down at his book. Of all people to overhear that private conversation. A tear rolled down the apple of my cheek. I desperately prayed he hadn't seen it. I sauntered to the door, slamming it on my way out, not caring who heard the loud bang inside, Draco included.
At that moment I truly considered whether I wanted to keep my spot at Hogwarts. Too much drama had unfolded for me and it seemed unbearable. How could I avoid it without leaving altogether?
"Wow, Adela. I didn't know Cedric was such an arse. Maybe 5th years are as bad as they sound. I'm really sorry he said those awful things to you." Harry consoled.
"I'll get over it. It's not my first time dealing with a bully." I was implying Draco.
"Well, look on the bright side. The Yule Ball is coming up...Why don't you go with me? As friends." He offered.
"Yeah, and me too!" Ron butted in.
"Count me and Luna in." Hermoine added. "It'll be one big group of friends, going together."
"Thanks you guys, it really means a lot." I ended the conversation there.
I felt lucky to already have such a loyal group of friends. If I left Hogwarts, I would never see them again. I couldn't manage without them.
