WE ONLY SEE EACH OTHER AT WEDDINGS AND FUNERALS
"picture book, pictures of your mama,
taken by your papa a long time ago"
2019
"WONDER IF THE WHOLE FAMILY will show," Diego said from beside (Y/N). They were taking an orange city taxi back to the academy. Diego initially didn't want to attend the funeral, but his sister's beseechments had changed his mind. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad to visit their childhood home just one last time if it meant being able to see their mom again.
(Y/N) stared out of the window, watching the trees and buildings fly past them, messing with the ends of her (H/C) strands of hair. "I hope Vanya will be there, I want to see what she's up to these few days."
"And about Allison and Luther?"
"Allison's working on that new movie... Luther can stay on the moon for all I care."
Diego snorted in amusement, "you're still not giving up on what he said to you when you left, huh?"
"Who's to ever forget someone shouting at you, 'you can't deny you've got daddy issues. Swapping him out for your brother isn't gonna solve anything, just like how you thought falling in love with another would!' in public?" (Y/N) complained, earning a concerned look from the taxi driver, to which she replied with, "we're not related! Not to mention the fact that we didn't even like each other in that way!"
"What conversation were the two of you having when he said that? I can't remember." It was clear that Diego did, but he was just teasing (Y/N) for entertainment. In her annoyance over Luther's terrible choice of words, she didn't think twice before answering him.
"Just after my last mission, I broke the news to him that I was leaving the academy. We were the only two left, anyways, and you offered to let me join you in being batman junior." (Y/N) leaned against the car door and rest her head on her arm in an attempt to sit more comfortably. "I don't think he was watching the fumes coming out of his mouth because soon enough, everyone on the same street as us was staring in our direction."
"So it looks like you're not as confident to go back now," Diego said.
"Too late," (Y/N) sat up straight and pressed her face up against the window. "We're here."
As the vehicle slowed to a stop, the duo stared at the old building standing before them. Grand and architectural. Over the years, as their father lived alone with the exception of Pogo, Grace and the occasional visits from Luther if he wasn't up in space, the building had deteriorated into nothing but an old and dusty manor filled to the brim with multifarious amounts of tinklebits and accessories.
It was only when (Y/N) creaked open the rusty metal gate that memories from her childhood had started to flood in.
"(Y/N)! Come on, the others are going to get ice cream. You should follow us!"
The pavement was cold and was covered with fallen leaves, but (Y/N) could faintly see the scribbles and cracks from when she and her siblings would sit around during the summer. The only times they could leave the premises were for missions, so they would sometimes sneak out to just feel free. Even if it was just a couple feet away from the academy doors.
