$800,000 a year was a steal for a location like this but Cheng Huan still couldn't afford it.
As great as her business has been, she had only saved up about $10,000 or so. That's way below the cost to sublease. On top of that, there would also be cost associated with remodeling and setting up the storefront.
Cheng Huan was a bit disappointed. Why couldn't she have transmigrated earlier? Feeling regretful for herself, she said to the person on the phone, "I am sorry. I don't have enough money right now, so..."
"Oh, that's fine. I am not in any hurry." The person on the other end of the phone was still chuckling. "Just call me when you have saved up enough."
Yeah, I am pretty sure your contract would be up before I could save up enough, thought Cheng Huan to herself. But she thanked the person anyway.
Having hung up the phone, Cheng Huan's passion was mostly gone. It didn't matter how perfect the storefront was; it was all moot if she has no money.
Her mood wasn't very good and didn't feel like spending more time out. She headed home with XingXing after he finished his cake.
XingXing, on the other hand, remembered the new storefront. He was a mature and familial child and was told that his mom would not need to work as hard as she was right now after moving to a new location. He asked about it almost daily.
Cheng Huan only told him it wasn't ready yet.
After she returned that day, she contacted the management company again to keep an eye out on something smaller, and perhaps in a less desirable location. Most important, preferably the rent would be below 50,000 a month.
The management company took that well but wasn't able to find anything suitable right away. They just asked her to wait.
While she was waiting, another news came before her storefront.
"What did you say?" Cheng Huan paused for a bit but still wasn't able to handle what she had just heard casually. "Demolition and relocation?"
"Yeah. Ping'an Village is about to be demolished." The caller on the other end listed out all the terms and conditions before saying to her again, "If you are okay with it then you should find a time to swing by. They so happen to be checking out the place recently. Unless you are not happy with the terms..."
He thought about it for a little and added, "This is a very reasonable price already. If you pass up on this opportunity, there might not be another one."
Cheng Huan acknowledged it and said she would swing by when she had a chance.
Cheng Huan was still processing about what had just happened after she had hung up the phone.
The one who had just called her was the street director of Ping'an Village, who had filled her in regarding the demolition and relation of Ping'an Village.
Ping'an Village was where the original owner used to live. It was a factory dormitory from a century ago. It was assigned to the original owner's grandparents back then. When they passed away, giving that the original owner has no other relatives, the place had gone to her.
Even though the house was under the original owner's name, Cheng Huan has never had any ideas about it.
Partly because the area was small and very expensive and it was known to have a lot of residents who refused to move. Most everyone felt that it'd not be sold for demolition any time soon. And also partly because owing to some clauses from a century ago, the properties there have no property rights and could not be succeeded as inheritance.
Meaning, when the original residents passed away, the place would automatically return to the government and had nothing to do with Cheng Huan. She didn't have the grounds to say anything even if the developer was to take demolish it immediately.
Cheng Huan felt that the developers would be well aware of this. They were in it for the money. One less family meant millions of dollars less in the cost of demolition. Who'd say no to that?
"Mom? What's the matter?" asked XingXing put away the toys in his hand and asked cautiously as he walked over to ch. He had already looked over at his mother a few times and she was still sitting there motionlessly. The little kiddo was starting to get worried.
