Chapter 117 - "These are... the clothes from last time. They have been laundered." (1)
Time always flew when one was busy. Cheng Huan's restaurant started to get on track. Her food was tasty so business was usually good. There was usually no empty spots during meal times and, after getting a number, sometimes the wait could be as long as one to two hours.
Jiang MingYuan went on his business trip for ten days and returned on December 16. The day he returned was Friday and it had rained in City C. The air was cold and moist.
Right after he had gotten off the plane and returned to the office, Jiang MingYuan went into a meeting. There was a lot to go over and that went all the way to early afternoon. When Jiang MingYuan checked the time after they have concluded one topic, it was already 5:30 PM.
XingXing was already out of school by now. Jiang MingYuan missed his son a lot after not seeing him for ten days. He lifted his hand and stopped the upper management who was about to start talking and said, "Let's call it a day. We will continue tomorrow night. Dismiss."
Nobody wanted to work overtime if they didn't need to. As soon as Jiang MingYuan finished talked, those in the conference room stood up right away and said goodbye to him.
Jiang MingYuan was the first one out with is assistant walking next to him. He gave him a look and said, "Why don't you take off too?"
The assistant acknowledged him, pressed the elevator for him, and told him that the chauffeur was already here. Jiang MingYuan nodded and took his dedicated elevator downstairs.
The car was parked right in front and Jiang MingYuan got into the back seat. After the door was closed, the chauffeur asked him where he was heading.
"Jinxiu..." He was just about to say Cheng Huan's address when he changed his mind, "Let's head back to my place first."
There was something he needed to pick up first.
The restaurant had been opened for ten days and Cheng Huan no longer need to worry about it all the time. She only needed to go there once a day to make sure everything was alright.
It was a rainy day and even the walls were wet. Even with the air-conditioning running, it didn't feel any better.
Such was the perfect weather for hotpot. When Cheng Huan visited her store, she brought some ingredients back and planned to have hotpot at home that night.
It wasn't difficult to make hotpot. The main ingredient was the soup base.
Blanch long bones, then add water, bring to a boil and let shimmer for an hour. Pull out the bones, add in butter and stir, then add in green onions, salt, dates, goji berries, and slices of tomato.
Cheng Huan started the soup base early and it was already done by the time XingXing got home. The entire house smelled of soup.
XingXing could smell the delectable smell before he even walked inside of the house. What he ate in the afternoon was already mostly gone and the little kiddo was already getting hungry. As soon as the security door was opened, he dashed inside the living room, took off his earmuffs and gloves, tossed his backpack onto the house, and ran inside of the kitchen.
The stove has already been turned off and XingXing tried to look inside the pot standing on his tipped toes but he wasn't able to see anything as he was too short. He put his hands down regretfully, gulped, and turned toward Cheng Huan. "Mom, what is this? I want some."
"This is the soup base for hotpot. It's not ready yet. We will need to put the ingredients inside and cook them before we can eat." Cheng Huan took off all of her cold weather outfit and walked over. She shooed XingXing away, turned the stove back on, and put the last few items in.
The soup base was brought to a boil and the dates and goji berries rolled inside of it. Cheng Huan turned the stove off, pulled out the ethanol stove and place the pot with the soup base onto the dinner table.
The items to go inside of the hotpot had already been prepared. Beef and lamb were sliced from fresh meat, thin-layered egg dumplings made that afternoon were stuffed with minced pork, water chestnuts, and carrots, crunchy and not greasy. In addition to meats, Cheng Huan had also bought quite a bit of vegetables and soy products, items such as fresh napa cabbage, broccoli and fresh tofu, etc. All of them plated out neatly.
Each plate wasn't very big but there were over ten plates. Just from the looks alone, it was obvious that there was more food than the two of them.
The flame from the ethanol stove was blue and the soup base was brought to a boil once again. Cheng Huan put a piece of beef inside of it, stirred it with the communal chopsticks, and said to XingXing, who was staring while wiping his drool away, "You need to wait a little bit longer. This meat will cook quickly. It will be ready in a minute."
As soon as she finished saying that, the doorbell rang.
XingXing was so focused on the food in front of him that he wasn't paying attention to anything else so Cheng Huan had to get up and get the door.
Standing outside the door was the man that had been gone for 11 days. He greeted her, "Good evening, are you having dinner right now?"
The moment that Cheng Huan saw him, she immediately recalled the incident from the previous weekend. She wanted to slam the door on him but he had already squeezed inside.
Cheng Huan regretted for the missed opportunity. She acknowledged him coldly, closed the door, and asked, "You've eaten, right?"
The man, carrying a few bags in his hand, turned around and said that he hasn't have dinner yet. He had on a full suit and looked a little tired. His look was gentle. He asked Cheng Huan in a testing tone, "Can I have dinner here?"
Of course not. You should leave now.
