It happened after a day at school. They traded names for a chat room at school, even if Kim was a bit hesitant. Duncan had a way with persuading people. and he did it amazingly.

The smaller girl returned home after a day of school, placing her bag down at the bottom of the stairs. Her parents asked her about how her day went, and she responded them hurridly, practially running towards her computer. After logging on, she got the flimsy slip of paper out of her pocket and typed her friends name into the computer and sent him a message.

He almost imidiatley responded, and the pair talked for hours on end until one of them had to go and eat. They did this every day for the next 3 months, however something happened that could either bring them closer, or it could split them up.

Kim always felt a strange feeling when talking to Duncan. It was as if she felt safe and confident in herself. As if she finally felt like she had someone. But there was something else there. Something that make her stomach turn, something that made her feel excited. Kim was finally in love.

The smaller girl kept this a secret from him for the next two years, but when they left school, Duncan managed to get into a science course at a really good university. This meant moving away from Kim, and after the first term, he slowly learnt that he didn't have time for his computer.

Kim on the other hand, messaged him every night; her heart sinking when she got no reply. Tears rolled down her soft, delicate cheeks as she typed into the chat.

Kim: 22/09/1999: 5:08pm "Duncan?"

Kim: 22/09/1999: 6:43pm "Duncan? Why aren't you responding?"

Kim: 22/09/1999: 9:19pm "Duncan? Are you alright?"

Duncan was completely unaware of his computer flashing and making the notification sound as he worked on his new inventions. The truth was, Duncan was forgetting about Kim. Forgetting about their friendship that they had since they were in secondary school. All of their memories that they shared together, it was all gone in his mind.

This broke Kim. She had no one to talk to, no one to spill her feelings out to. No one to care for her. No one who was there for her. And she was giving up. It was several times that she punched walls, cried, called out for him, cursed at him, but he was never there to hear it.

Time passed once more, and Duncan was doing amazingly at his University. He was now in his second year. The scientist was walking around his small room in the University halls, and noticed something burried under the piles of paper and failed inventions.

"Oh, my computer." He said to himself, thinking nothing of what he just found. "That old thing can go, I don't use it anymore." He said, unplugging it for the final time and taking it to the bins outside and throwing it in, not caring about any damage he might have caused it.

He cut off his communication with his old best friend and succseeded, doing great things.

She ended up spiralling into an endless pit of depression and anxiety.

Isn't it amazing, what a single action from a person can do to another?
