"So are you excited to try your first ever Emerson High lunch?" Dylan says to me while I'm putting some books into my locker.
"After what Tyler told me this morning, not really. But, I'll give it a try. I have this feeling that I'm going to end up packing my lunch for the rest of the year though."
"Smart girl." Dylan says and lifts his brown paper bag in the air.
"Ok, I'm ready. Let's go to lunch."
"Alright, follow me." He says with a smile.
Before we left the senior hallway we spot Tyler leaning against a locker talking to Jesse.
"Watch this," Dylan says to me and shouts, "Hey Tyler are you coming to lunch or what!"
Tyler looks over at us, "I'll meet you guys there!" he says in an annoyed tone.
Dylan starts laughing and I smile, "He hates it when I interrupt his flirting time with Jesse."
"I see that." And I can't help but laugh too. "So who else is going to be sitting with us at lunch?"
"Just one other person, her name's Tate. She's been friends with Tyler and I since we were little. She should be there already by the time we get there."
"Ok, cool. I can't wait to meet her." I smile.
We get to the cafeteria and there's kids everywhere. Dylan now walks in front of me guiding us through the cafeteria trying to find Tate and our table. A bunch of people who I don't know come up to Dylan and say hi to him and he says hi back to them with a smile on his face. I watch him as he does this and I think to myself how much I love his smile. His smile alone could light up a room.
Dylan continues to guide me through the cafeteria until he sees our table and turns around to me. "It's right over here." He says and points at a table where a blond girl is sitting. She sees Dylan and waves at him and he waves back.
We reach the table and Dylan and Tate exchange hi's, then Dylan starts to introduce me. "Tate, this is Kacey, she's my new neighbor that moved here from Atlanta." Dylan says and puts his arm around me and I look up at him and smile.
"Ah so this is the new neighbor." Tate says and smiles at Dylan and he looks to the ground with a smile on his face, but I pretend I don't notice. "Hi it's nice to meet you! I feel sorry that you have to live next to this one." She says pointing at Dylan.
"Shut up Tate." Dylan laughs.
"I love your outfit by the way." Tate tells me.
"I don't think it will be that bad." I say looking at Dylan and smiling and he smiles back. "And thank you! You're outfit is perfect. I really like your flannel." I smile at her. I can feel Dylan's eyes on me as I'm telling Tate this, and she notices too, because while I was talking she would look at Dylan then back to me and smile.
"Thanks! Can you believe that I found this at Goodwill for only four dollars?"
"No way. That's amazing!" I say to Tate and we both smile.
"Sorry to interrupt your fashion talk ladies, but Kacey needs to experience all the wonders of the caferteria lunch line. You two can carry on this conversation when we return." Dylan says and puts a hand on each of my shoulders. I look at Tate before Dylan leads me away and she smiles and waves.
Dylan takes me over to the line and there's surprisingly a lot of choices to choose from. I see a salad bar, a sandwhich station, pizza, a pile of all different kinds of bagels, and the main course, which today is lasagna. It all looks equally gross, so I just decide on a salad. I pay for my salad and Dylan and I head back to our table.
Tyler still isn't at the by the time we get there, so Dylan and I sit next to each other on one side, leaving Tate on the other side with an open seat for Tyler. In the middle of one of our conversations, Tate looks up, "Well look who it is." She says smiling at Tyler.
"Hey Tate." I hear Tyler say and I turn around to see him coming. He stands next to Tate and puts his backpack on the seat. "That was not cool Dylan. I don't do that to you when you're doing it with Kacey!" He says then leaves to the lunch line.
I look at Tate and she looks at me. I'm afraid to even look at Dylan, but I do. He looks at me and gives me a faint smile, then gets up and joins Tyler in the lunch line. Tate and I continue talking with each other until Dylan and Tyler return, both smiling, which is a good sign.
"Sorry about before guys. It's just Jesse drives me crazy, in a good way, and yeah she just gets to me." Tyler says to us and Tate looks down at her tray. Am I sensing something between Tate and Tyler? I look at Tate then to Tyler.
We carry on conversation until the end of the lunch period. I find out that Tate is in my next period math class, and she's also in Dylan, Tyler, and I's cooking class. I'm so happy that she's going to be in my math class, I really like her, and I'm glad that I won't be alone.
Tate and I say our goodbyes to the boys and head off to math. We walk into math, and right away my eyes land on a blond haired girl and she immediately looks up and meets my eyes. Maya.
