(Janet's POV)
November, 19 2025
Sitting in the library, thinking about my history assignment, I felt a gentle tap on my shoulder and heard a soft voice. “Hey, Jany! What's up?”
“Hey Alice! Nothing. Just thinking about the history assignment.” I said.
“Have you decided any topic?” She asked.
“Not yet. By the way, what topic are you going to work on?” I asked.
“I guess I'll do some research on witchcraft and all these kinds of stuff.” She said and I mocked her saying, “C'mon Alice, wake up from your reverie.”
“I am wide awake and what do you mean by reverie? Witches and witchcraft do exist and I am sure my brother was a victim of one of those things. He did not commit suicide Janet.” She said and her eyes filled with tears.
“I'm sorry Alice. Please don't be upset by what I said. I know Jeremy is no longer with us but for how long will we keep holding on to all these things and keep grieving. He is not going to come back by us grieving like this. We should now leave all these things behind and move on.” I said and gently placed my hand on her shoulder.
“But I want to know the reason behind his death.” She said and I remained silent in response because she was absolutely right. I don't know what could be the reason why Jeremy committed suicide.
***************
Alice lost her brother Jeremy a year ago. Everyone believed that her brother had committed suicide but Alice always refused to believe this. She believed that Jeremy was murdered and some dark evil forces were behind his death. I never refused to believe her words because Jeremy had no valid reason to commit suicide, but I had some objections by her belief that some dark evil forces were behind his death.***************
Jeremy was one of my good friends, to be honest, he was more than a friend to me. He was a tall, good-looking young guy with dark brown eyes and black hair. We studied in the same school and later got enrolled together in the same university, Paradise University. He was very intelligent and a top student. Apart from this, he was also a great basketball player. I still remember that we always used to do our assignments together. I swear I could not complete a single assignment without his help. Well, to be honest, I am no less in terms of studies but maybe I liked working with him so I used to find some excuse to work or study with him and he never had any objection to this. Everything was going well in his life but suddenly a storm came and took him away with it.***************
—Flashback—
November 15, 2024Alice had gone with her parents to attend her cousin's wedding and Jeremy was alone at home. Meanwhile my cell phone rang and I picked up the call and said, “Hello Alice!”
“Hello Janet, my brother is not picking up my call. I called him three times but he did not pick up. And…” she said in a nervous tone and then paused.“And what?” I asked curiously.
“Janet, a few minutes ago I received a message from an unknown number. It said something weird. It said, Deqos hesuo emi patria.” She said.
I didn't understand what she was trying to say but I also felt something strange but still I said to reassure her, “Maybe someone is playing a prank on you. Don't worry Jeremy is fine.”
“I hope so.” She said and hung up.
Within a couple of minutes she called again and said in a very panicked voice, “Janet Jer-Jeremy”
“Alice what happened?” I asked getting nervous.
“Jeremy is…he is dead.” She said and started crying.
I freaked out and jumped out of my bed screaming, “whatt!?”
I ran to my car and started the engine and drove to their house. As soon as I reached there, I saw that their house was surrounded by the cops. I ran to Jeremy's room where I saw his body lying on the floor with blood oozing from his neck and a dagger in his hand which was bathed in blood. Seeing him soaked in blood, I couldn't hold back my tears and started sobbing.
I wiped my tears and walked towards Alice and hugged her while whispering, “I'm so sorry Alice. I'm so sorry.”
“Mrs. Bennett called my dad and told him about this” she said, sobbing.
“Hello, Janet. I have heard a lot about you from Alice but I never expected that we would meet this way.” Said Mrs Bennett. I just nodded and didn’t say anything because the situation was so horrible and we were all in too much shock to say anything.
“The wedding party was over and we were on our way home when she called us.” Alice said.
“As a good neighbor it was my duty to keep an eye on Jeremy since he was alone. I mean... uh... actually I heard his scream. He screamed so loudly that I couldn't stop myself from going over to his house,” Mrs. Bennet said in a trembling voice.
“Why did my son scream? What had happened?” Asked Mrs Branson, Alice and Jeremy's mother, as tears continued to flow from her eyes.
“I honestly don't know anything. When I came here Jeremy was lying on the floor. His throat was cut and the room was filled with blood. I was scared and terrified. I picked up my cell phone and called the cops, and then I called you," Mrs. Bennett said to Mrs Branson.
—Flashback ends—***************
November, 19 2025“Oye! Back to earth” Alice said while tapping on my shoulder.
“Where were you drowned?” She asked while smirking.
“Thinking about that day.” I whispered so low that she couldn't hear it and asked, “you what?”
“Nothing. I think we should go home now. We are getting late.” I said.
***************
After coming back home, I took the dinner and hopped to my bed and thousands of questions started running through my mind. Did he really commit suicide? Or someone murdered him? But why? Who could have done this? And what was that weird message? What do those words mean?
