Chapter 15: And Now You're a Lady
Hana turned to look back when he stopped, his legs going numb and his feet turning to rocks. Seungri tried to look at her, her doe-eyes glistening with tears under the fluorescent lights. She turned to him fully, hastily pulling him into an embrace that pushed any breath out of him.
"It's Mom."
Terror and shock permeated every cell in Seungri's body as he followed through the procedure of entering the unit; they put him into a white suit that covered his frame, told him that they couldn't let him in past the glass wall to see his mother, and set him and his sister in the room where his father was already seated. His dad remained in his chair, his eyes dead as he looked at his son. Letting out a heavy sigh, his father closed his eyes and returned his head to his palms. Seungri couldn't concentrate on the scene, instead advancing towards the glass wall and pressing his hand against the barrier, barely turning his head when he heard the doctor enter.
"Good evening, everyone....Commander," the doctor greeted, giving a polite nod to the blond.
Seungri shifted his gaze back to the frail frame in the bed, draped in a white hospital gown and covered in IV lines and monitors that made terrifyingly constant beeping noises. His breath began to fog up the glass, and he stepped back slightly, his hand falling limply by his side.
"What happened, doctor."
Seungri's voice felt raw in his throat, as if the noise was trying to scrape past two rocks that had lodged themselves over the dry expanse of his tongue.
The doctor readjusted his clipboard, skimming his eyes briefly over the contents on it. "It seems she picked up a virus on her last run."
Seungri blinked harshly, his brain picking up the word virus with an intense grip and he racked his brain for what the members had said about it at the earlier meeting.
"She's sick?" The question tainted his mouth with a repugnant taste. Confusion flickered across his visage as he desperately tried to piece together the situation. "But my sister was out there too...how come she isn't sick?" Seungri looked at the people present in the room; his dad and sister's heads were hung while the doctor shifted uncomfortably on his feet.
"The virus is similar to the last one that was spread," the doctor began, carefully choosing his words. "It seems that your sister, like most people here, had received the vaccination previously."
Seungri turned his full attention to the doctor then. "What do you mean she was vaccinated previously. Are you saying my mother wasn't?" Seungri spat out the last word, feeling a deep rooted outrage bubbling to his surface. It didn't make any sense. "Why wouldn't my mother be vaccinated?"
Seungri felt a consoling touch from his sister on his shoulder, but he batted her outstretched arm away.
"WHY is my MOTHER SICK?"
His question echoed through the room loudly, reverberating off the glass prison. No answers sprung forth from anyone in the room and fury took over. Seungri snapped; he lunged at the doctor, gripping his collar tightly as he slammed him against wall. The doctor's clipboard clattered to the ground as he raised his hands in the air showing submission, his labored breaths laced with pleas of 'don't hurt me'.
"It seems that she was missed," Seungri's father interjected tiredly. It took a moment for Seungri to cool off enough to realize that it was his father that was speaking. His grip slowly loosened off the trembling practitioner.
"...What? How is that possible?!"
Seungri's father stood, making his way to look at his ill wife. His posture was slumped, as if completely defeated already.
