PercyOnce I got to Mrs. Yancey's office, I slouched down onto the floor where I used to nap during finals week.
It had been a long day, and after that conversation with Paul, I wasn't feeling great.
Even though I had annoyed her last period, and even though she chose to wait to tell me about my sweatshirt, and even though I thought last night had been different between us... it was still nice to be around just Annabeth.
I smiled up at her.
"What did Paul want?" She asked me
I looked down. I didn't want to tell her all the ways I was screwing up, I didn't want her to feel like she had to help me with everything. She already had so much going on.
"Nothin' just reminded me about dinner tonight." I said. Annabeth and I didn't lie to each other, ever, so I felt just a little bad about stretching the truth.
"Do you know what you're making?" She eyed me. Sometimes she could trick me into telling her what our family dinners were, like the one week where she slowly figured it out based on the italian puns I had been telling. But, she wasn't getting me this time.
"Pfft it's a surprise, and you're not getting me this time." I reached my foot over to nudge hers.
The way she was eyeing me made it obvious she was waiting to tell me something.
"Alright give it to me, what'd I do in lit to make you look at me like that?" I said to her.
Really, I couldn't get the image out of my head. Whatever I did, I never wanted her to look at me like that again.
She got out of her chair and sat across from me on the floor. The office wasn't very wide. With her leaning against one side of drawers, and me leaning against the other, our knees met in the middle.
"You were just flirting with Drew Tanaka" She gestured behind her, towards Paul's classroom.
I laughed a little, thank God she wasn't mad at me for something, like, actual.
"Don't laugh! I'm mad at you."
She scrunched up her nose like she did when she was mad. She looked so cute when she did that, like when we were kids and she would get a brain freeze, she would make that same face.
I smiled at her and raised my eyebrows.
"Are you serious? I basically said the same thing to her that I said to Piper earlier... was I flirting with Piper?"
"That was different. Drew was all "I bet you're worth every penny" Gross!" Annabeth mimicked her in a high pitched voice, I started laughing for real then.
"You know, you could make a living doing impressions." I told her sarcastically.
Instantly, I felt better. Laughing with Annabeth was second nature, she was my favorite person to be around.
She shoved me. And I caught her arm when she did. I had to know something.
"Why would it matter if I were flirting with Drew?"
She pulled her hand back. I saw something flash across her eyes. They went stormy and then glanced away. I started holding my breath, I don't know why.
"Drew bullied Piper freshman year, she was awful to her. And you were just flirting with her. It makes you a bad friend." She explained.
I nodded, but something still tugged in my mind.
