It was a known fact throughout the mindscape that Janus and Remus had always been inseparable.

Ever since the split, Janus had defended his friend. From Patton, from the others, and eventually from Virgil. Whatever came their way, they would face it together; that was just how things rolled with them. When Anxiety left, they'd promised never to leave each other. When Janus introduced himself, Remus did shortly after. When both of them got shunned away from the 'light' sides, at least they'd had each other.

Sometimes, when Remus had had a bad day. Janus would sing to him. A different song every time, but it still never failed to be soothing. More than once, if you'd walked into the dark commons in the early morning, you'd see both Janus and Remus on the couch, having fallen asleep while talking about the misfortunes that had happened the day before, Janus's hand usually on Remus's head. Another thing that helped calm the darker Creativity down after a bad day; fingers running through his hair.

When Janus was upset, Remus could usually tell as soon as he walked into the room, despite his best efforts to play it off as nothing at first. Take, for example, the time that Janus had first gotten back from introducing himself to the light sides. Remus had come into the room, excited that his best friend was back, and immediately wrapped Janus in a hug after seeing the expression on his face. Talking about it was rare- Remus wasn't the best at verbal comfort. The hugs were enough, though, Janus could tell that Remus was doing his best to comfort him, and just knowing that helped a lot.

When Virgil left, it left Remus practically in shambles. Janus, of course, was also upset, but he pushed away his sadness for another time; Remus needed him. Remus was torn apart, Virgil was like a brother to him. How could he just leave?! It was like the emo had taken a piece of Remus's heart with him, a hole that felt like it would never fill.

One of the late mornings soon after Virgil had joined the light sides, Janus found Remus laying on the couch, silent, muffled sobs racking through his body.

Janus had been quick to pick up his friend, ask what was the matter, though he was sure he already knew.

"I... I j-just miss him, Dee. Why'd he h-ave to g-go?! He wa-was hap-py with us!"

"Shh... I know, Rem."

"I-It's like- it's like he tore out my heart and p-put it in a blender.. And it's never going t-to be th-the same..." Janus's heart broke a little more at those words. He'd known that Virgil leaving would affect Remus in such a way, but hearing him say the words out loud still hurt nonetheless.

Janus, still pushing away the resurfaced ache in his heart, told his friend this: "No matter what, Remus, I'm never going to leave you. We have to stick together now that it's just us, right?" Well, just them and the other one. But he never came out of his room.

"Y-Yeah... partners in crime," sniffled Remus, wiping his eyes. Janus gave him a small smile and pulled him into his lap, running his ungloved fingers through the other's hair and humming a soft tune.

The humming eventually turned into singing... "Ooh, love, no one's ever gonna hurt you, love, I'm gonna give you all of my love, nobody matters but you~" he sang, riffing on the last word and fading it out into a comfortable silence.

And if the next night he wrapped himself in Virgil's old hoodie and curled up on his bed sobbing, wishing for Virgil to come back, wishing he could take back the things he'd said, no one needed to know.

This turned out way different than I had in mind. It's the first fic for a while that I've really put some real work into that doesn't feel forced, so yay for that!
