Janet
The room was silent. Completely silent. Almost as if everyone was ready for me to snap but it was the last thing on my mind. The last thing on my mind was snapping. So even though all eyes were on me— waiting for me to look up and react— my mind was rereading this headline over and over again praying that it changed. My fingers clutched the phone and I was truly stuck. Honestly and truly stuck.
"Say something..." Gil broke the silence.
"Anything?" Shawn asked next.
Neither got a response as I kept my eyes on the screen in front of me. My phone rang and I saw it was my mother calling. Letting it ring, I kept my eyes on the headline. My eyes scanned over the woman's picture and I couldn't help but lose hope. This woman was gorgeous. The caption said she was a model. I could see one of the reasons Kyrin slept with her. She was beautiful and it was a hard fact to look around.
My door bell rang suddenly and I still didn't move. Gil sighed as he stood. "I got it. Shawn stay with her."
He left the room and Shawnette spoke softly. "J.. you gotta say something. You can't stare at your phone all day." I didn't respond but instead continued looking. "I don't know what to say to get you to talk Dunk but you gotta talk soon. So how about I make you laugh? I got jokes!"
No response came from me again and I wished that she would just give up on trying. I didn't have anything to say at the moment. Nothing worth voicing in this exact moment. I couldn't find the words. I couldn't find the emotions. For once I felt everything at once and no emotion was higher than the other but instead all the same. I was feeling everything at once and I was stuck.
Between the headline and the article— my head was spinning. They knew Kyrin had filed for divorce. They knew she'd moved out of the house with the children. It highlighted how she cheated with a woman she worked with but was it honestly even cheating? With a shaky breath, I opened the folder and picked up the pen. Signing my name under Kyrin's, I closed it back and placed the pen on the table. I felt my heart rip and glued my eyes back to the screen to slow the tears down that were about to fall.
Shawn sighed. "Okay let me think. What do you call a pig who does karate?" She asked brightly just for me to not pay her any mind. Soon, she answered herself. "A pork chop!"
Suddenly, I snapped out of it and looked up at my friend in all seriousness. "Stop."
"You want to be alone?"
"Yes." I replied lowly.
She nodded and got up. "Alright. I'll let Gil know." As she went to leave, Gil turned the corner with someone behind him. Shawnette spoke. "Janet wants to be alone."
"Well she needs to be alone with this woman right here." Gil pulled Kyrin in front of him and pushed her into the room. "You two can be alone together all day. Shawn and I are leaving. Call us if you need us Janet and sorry for leaving you but this is something that a third party has no business being involved in. Let's go Shawn."
