You once again followed (More like got dragged by) Mystery inside his room. Once there, he stopped and kneeled down in front of the box you remembered once having the key to. He fully sat down in front of it, beckoning you to do so as well. You did so without question, but you didn't know why he all of a sudden wanted to show you the contents of the box now, opposed to before when he nearly killed you just because you had the key. Speaking of which, he picked up Mago, who was sitting a little ways away from the box and set the doll down in front of him.

"Can I have the key please?" Mystery asked Mago. He didn't respond, not even in Mystery's head.

"Mago? Hello? Wake up!" Mystery said, gently shaking him.

"Oh well, I'll just take it, I'm sure he won't mind." He turned the doll around and reached into a little slit in the back of him, pulling out the familiar brass key. Huh, so that's how it fell out last time. Mystery put the key in the keyhole of the box, turning it. The medium-sized box opened with a click, and as Mystery opened the lid the soft sounds of a music box filled the air. The tune that played sounded familiar, you were sure you had heard it before but you couldn't exactly put a finger on it. You looked over to Mystery, who had what you assumed to be a sort of sad expression on his face as if the tune reminded him of something he had long forgotten. He sat in silence until the song stopped, as it's final note rang out you both turned your attention to the box's contents. There were surprisingly quite a few items inside. The main items were a bunch of candy, which looked to be rather old. Mystery reached in and grabbed the candy in his hand, giving half of the candy to you.

"Mystery had been saving these for a while, he's sorry he hasn't given it to you earlier, especially when you said you were hungry..." You looked down at the pieces of candy in your hand. Even though it looked old and probably didn't taste that good anymore, you certainly weren't going to appear ungrateful for it.

"Thank you, Mystery. That's very nice of you." You smiled. He smiled back with a rare genuine smile. You looked back in the box as Mystery already started eating his share of the candy. Underneath it had been a few photographs. You asked Mystery if you could look at them first, and he agreed, though hesitantly. You gently pulled out the small stack of photos. Most of them were just pictures of random things, like a light post, the sky, and what looked to be a dead bat.

"Who took these?" You asked.

"Oh... Um, Mystery doesn't know..." He responded though he sounded unsure. You kept looking through the pictures but stopped to look more closely at the final one. It looked like a family photo. The first thing you saw was the child standing in the middle. It took you a little bit to see the resemblance but you assumed it to be Mystery mainly based on the fact he was holding Mago in his arms. There was a woman standing next to him, dressed in very fancy clothing. Well, they were all dressed rather fancy. You could tell there was supposed to be someone else in the photo, but the rest has been ripped off. You turned the picture over. On the back was written, "The Burns family" along with the date the picture was taken. It had been taken a long time ago, 31 years ago to be exact. You showed the picture to Mystery.

"Is that you?" You asked first, pointing to the small child holding Mago. Mystery seemed unsure of how to answer. His brows furrowed as he gently took the photo in his hand. He slowly nodded after a few seconds.

"Uh... yeah, it is..." He replied distantly.

"Who's that?" You pointed to the lady next.

"That's..." He drew in a shaky breath as his eyes landed on the woman.

"That's... my... my mother..." Mystery finally answered.

"Oh..." You said. "She looks very pretty." You added, unsure of what to say.

"Yes, she was very nice..." He looked down at the floor.

"I miss her a lot..." Mystery said, barely above a whisper.

"What happened to her?" You blurted out, afterward wondering if you should have asked or not.

"She's- she's not here anymore..." Mystery replied. He handed you back the photo.

"Oh... so this must be your fathe-"

"No!" You weren't even able to finish the sentence when Mystery's shout interrupted you, startling you a bit.

"No, no... Mystery's sorry, it's just..." He heaved a sigh, "No, that man is NOT my father." He got up from the floor, grabbing Mago's arm and walking to the doorway.

"I'm going to go take a walk." He said, leaving you sitting on the floor, the photo still in your hand. You felt bad for asking all those questions, you shouldn't have done that. You gently set the photographs back into the box like you had found them. You were about to close the box when something else at the very bottom caught your eye. It looked like a badly crumpled up piece of paper before you realized it was another picture. You took it out and gently uncrumpled it and flattened it out. There was only one person featured in the center of it, and even though the resemblance once again greatly varied, you knew it had to have been Mystery. There was no date on the back, but you assumed it had to have been taken a long time ago. Maybe 15 or 20 years ago, at least. You definitely weren't going to ask him though. You weren't exactly sure where the picture was taken but it looked like a rather nice place. Mystery was wearing a beautiful-looking suit, which was topped off by a hat, and his hair was nicely done and overall he looked a lot happier and healthier. You couldn't help but wonder what had happened that changed him. You set the picture back into the box on top of the other photos and closed it. You took the key out and placed it on top of the box.

You exited the room and began wandering around the hallways in an attempt to find Mystery. Eventually, you found him huddled in a corner with Mago in his arms. You approached him and sat down next to him.

"I'm sorry I asked so many questions," You said after a few seconds, "I was just curious. I didn't mean to upset you." You apologized.

"It's okay." Was all he replied, the sound of his voice slightly muffled due to the back of Mago's head being pressed up against his face. You both sat in silence for maybe a minute or two.

"Mystery is sorry too," He said, breaking the silence, "He just... doesn't like to think about his past." You put a hand on his shoulder.

"It's alright, I understand. If you don't want to talk about your past, that's okay." Mystery then pulled you into a tight embrace, gently setting his chin on the top of your head due to his height. You returned the embrace, trying to comfort him. You hoped he was okay.

I've been writing really far ahead with this story recently in an attempt to make the story a bit more coherent but I don't know if that's helping me or not because I haven't been very proud of my stuff recently and that's why I was SUPER hesitant to post these, but I'm not sure if it's just because I've been going through a tough time or not. I do apologize if my stuff really has dropped in quality lately, I just haven't been motivated and stuff blah blah but yeah if you notice that PLEASE tell me I won't be mad or anything lol, it's just if what I'm going through right now is affecting the quality of this then I want to know so then I can try to wait it out so then when I'm a bit more motivated and happier and stuff I can write it then now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go into fucking hibernation now also you're awesome
