The morning after everyone had returned to Chance Harbor from the Chamberlain's lake house, Evie woke up and got dressed to make her way to the Chamberlains' home. She knocked on the door and Mrs. Chamberlain opened it, "Morning, Mrs. Chamberlain. Is Faye up?", smiling the woman answered, "She's in her room. Come in."

Evie then walks up to Faye's room and knocks on her door. The Chamberlain girl ignores the sound until she hears a small voice, "Faye? It's Evie. I just wanted to make sure you were okay." With that Faye rushed to her door and opened it, "What are you doing here?"

"Well, you were pretty shaken yesterday, I just wanted to see if you were okay or if you needed anything." "Like you care.", says Faye with an attitude, to which the shorter girl answers with matching ferocity, "I just thought that with Melissa still out of town and going through her own thing you might want someone to talk to. My mistake. I'll leave." as she begins to turn away Faye calls out, "Wait! You can stay. If you want to, I mean."

Evie then turns around and with small steps walks into the girls room. They both sit down on the bed in an awkward silence, until Evie begins to walk around the room. She stops and looks at one of the walls that held a picture of the two girls. She smiles to herself and says, "I remember this." "Yeah. It was before you stopped being friends with me."

"Don't go there Faye." "Go where, Evie? Telling the truth?", turning around the younger Meade says, "No. Spinning things around. You know that's not what happened at all. I didn't just stop being your friend for no reason Faye."

"Whatever. Why are you even here. Like you said. We aren't friends." "You know what, you're right. I don't know why I'm here." Evie then goes to grab her purse and begins to walk towards the door. When she was about to open it she turned around, sharply, and said, "You know what?! I do know why I'm here! I'm here because it doesn't matter how bad of a friend you were or you still are, that for some annoying reason I still care about you! And I thought, I don't know, that maybe you would stop being such a bitch for one moment and let someone be there. I guess I was wrong. Because no matter what I do to try and be a good friend to you, even when you obviously don't deserve it, you won't appreciate it. And it'll just be a matter of time before you do something to purposefully hurt me."

"Right because I'm the only one that's to blame, right?" "That's not what I said." "No you just walked away, like you're doing right now." "What do you want from me?!" "For you to just be there for me. Right now. Because I need my best friend." "That's your problem Faye. You need me. But what about when I needed you. Where were you? Huh? Sleeping with my boyfriend. And when I asked you, you threw it in my face. Like you were proud of it. Of what you had done. Of hurting me."

"That's not why I did it." "Then why? Because it's been two years Faye and not once have you even tried to give me a reason or at least an excuse." "I don't know. I was just always... jealous, I guess." "Of what Faye? We did everything together."

"No we didn't. Not for a while. Not since Jake. I was jealous of how easy everything seemed for you. School, being liked by everyone, the way Jake looked at you. Like you were the sun and the moon combined. And then I noticed that he started pulling away from you. Little things, you know. And I thought, maybe, just maybe he can look at me like that."

By this point both girls had tears in their eyes. As soon as Faye gave her defense, Evie let a huff out and turned back around to make her way out of the room. Faye then said, "I'm sorry. Okay I am. I never wanted to hurt you. I wasn't even thinking about it. And then he was gone... and I realized what I had done, and that I would lose you. And I was having a really bad day. And I wanted to hurt you in that moment. But I'm so, so sorry, Evie. I really am. You were my best friend and I never wanted to lose you. Ever."

Evie faces her again and says, "Why didn't you just talk to me? Tell me how you were feeling." "I'm sorry." With that both girls then sat down and continued to have the conversation that they had both dreaded for so long. And without realizing it, they had begun to mend something that had laid broken for some time.
