--fred's pov, the night of the ball--

excitedly, me, george and y/n enter the great hall, ready to show off our costumes. instead of tables, we see a dance floor, crowded with students of all the different houses. there's a table of food on the left side of the hall where a lot of the teachers are, looking unenthusiastic. most are just eating cake and standing around, while a few (like dumbledore) are swaying and dancing to the music.

we notice lee dancing wildly, raving and cheering. he certainly looks like he's having a good time. we walk over to him and ask what he's dressed up as.

"a ghost, duh." he says.

"cool." y/n replies. "i'm gonna grab something to eat, you guys want anything?"

we all shake our heads and she walks over to the food table, leaving us to talk about the party, or whatever popped into our heads at that moment.

"so..." george awkwardly says, to break the silence between us.

"so..." i reply.

"what's new with you?"

"oh nothing mu-" i start to say, before seeing cedric diggory walk over to y/n and start a conversation. i've never liked him, with his confident and stuck-up personality. i hope y/n sees how much of an arse he is, preferably as soon as possible.

they introduce themselves and shake hands, but i'm too far away to hear what they're saying - i just hope nothing happens between them. this is not the way it was meant to go, i think to myself, hoping he stops talking to her soon.

not soon after, he walks back to his friends confidently - maybe a little too confidently. meanwhile, y/n finishes getting her food and i feel a little relieved.

"oi, fred!" lee gets my attention.

"yeah?" i reply.

"you alright?"

"yeah.. i'm fine." i hate having to hide my feelings for y/n, especially because george and lee are the people i tell everything to.

after a while, y/n comes back to us with a plate full of food. i open my mouth to say something, but i'm interrupted as cedric walks over to our group, a little too soon for my liking.

"hey y/n." i can already feel myself tensing up, but i try not to show it. "wanna dance?" he says to her with a confident grin. my eyes widen - so that's what he was saying to her earlier.

"sure." she agrees, and they walk over to the dance floor.

as soon as they're out of earshot, i start my rant. "why does y/n like him so much? he's just an overly confident, arrogant, selfish arse. i just don't see what she sees in him, honestly its just-"

"fred!" george stops me. "i get that you don't like cedric, but why do you care so much about his relationship with y/n?"

"uh..." i try to think of something to say that would help the situation, but nothing good comes to mind. "well.. you know... i just think he shouldn't just start conversations with random people when they're obviously pre occupied with other things." good cover story fred, i thought to myself. ugh, i bet that sentence didn't even make sense - i think george and lee are starting to suspect something.

after one or two songs, y/n comes back to us and george elbows me, like he thinks i would act up in front of her.

"have fun?" george asks.

"yeah, it was alright-" she starts.

i can't contain myself anymore. "i'm going to get a drink." i say, before storming off in the other direction. i guess george was right.
