Chapter 27

Thea's POV

"So..." I trailed off to try and soothe the silence that fell as soon as we drove out of the school parking lot, "Are you up for a drive around the city? It'll help you get acquainted with the area. But only if you're up for it, I don't mind either way."

Travis looked over at me and said, "Yeah sure, let's get it over with."

I told him the directions to the main street and pointed out all that I could think of. I told him about the good restaurants, cafes and stores, finally ending with the park.

"Do you wanna grab a bite to eat before we head back? I'm kind of hungry."

"Uh yeah sure, let's go to Sally's diner on the main street.", I said, having pointed it out earlier.

He nodded making the turn back to the main street, remembering the way quite well actually, and stopping at the diner.

We got out and entered the diner. The smell of greasy food made me smile and we were greeted by the owner, Sally herself, who was a sweet old lady. She directed us to our booth telling us all about how her wonderful husband had opened this diner in her honor many years back. She introduced her husband, Jim who waved at us from behind the counter. The diner was mostly empty at this time of the day since other than us there was only one other person here.

"What can I get you two sweethearts?", she asked handing us the menu.

"Um can I get today's special please?", I said not being able to decide what to get.

"Can I get a hamburger and a plate of small chocolate chips pancakes for the table please?", Travis said.

"Sure, thing honey. Anything to drink?"

"Two diet cokes?", Travis said, looking at me and relayed the same to Sally when I nodded. Sally confirmed our order and went to her husband to give him our order.

"So."

"So."

I chuckled at the timing, but continued anyway, "Did you manage to talk to the coach today?"

"Oh yeah, I have tryouts tomorrow morning. It wouldn't have been possible if he didn't already know about my history with sports at the boarding school. I guess that came in handy."

I smiled but I grew more curious about his previous school at his reply but his reaction from last night stopped me. I didn't want to jinx the simpleness of the day.

Travis excused himself, taking out his phone saying his mom was calling him, which I found sweet but judging from his expression he didn't. He stepped out of the diner to take the call whereas I busied myself by observing the diner. I can't really describe it other than by saying that it's your most basic diner with worn out booths but simple and sweet interior. The one thing that stood out for me was the board which took up most of the space on one of the walls. It was filled with polaroid pictures of people in these very booths and feedback notes by them. That was just so sweet.

Soon our food was placed by one of the other waiters and I waved at Travis from the window to come in. He wrapped up his call and came back to our booth.

I looked at my mini plater which was the special of the day and realized just how hungry I was. I was so engrossed in my food that I barely noticed that Travis had picked up the plate of pancakes that he ordered and placed it in front of me. I looked at him questionably at which he said, "This is my peace offering and my way of saying thanks for being a good host. Despite of how I treated you when we were younger and how much I know you hated me."
