3 years later

I walked along the wall of the maze; I wouldn't dare go in again. I promised myself I wouldn't go in ever again. However, I had a feeling deep down that I missed being a runner; mapping out the walls and running with the wind in my hair. There was a kind of beauty to it. The maze.

I ran my hand along where all of the Gladers, old and new had carved their names. I traced over my name, A...

I remembered carving this in the wall on my second day in the glade, since I nearly knocked myself out about three times on the first day here.... V

I remembered that the first time I had met these people I had now grown up with, I was scared of them... E

I must have been so annoying, running away like that in my first day, having to get someone to run after me, nearly breaking a few bones.... R

Poor Newt, oh, I probably gave that boy a heart attack when I ran into that branch.... Y

I let out a small chuckle and shook my head at the memories I have from that day all those years ago. I look at the names surrounding my name. Above it was Ben, he became a good friend of mine when I became a runner, he still is.

Below it was Alby, the boy who terrified me half to death, so much that I didn't want to do a tour with him on my first day.

On the right side was Minho, he is one of my best friends, I remember the first time I saw him was when I pushed past him and Newt to run away, I remember apologising a few times to both of the boys for that.

And on the left side was Newt, my best friend, the one who has looked after me since day one. The one who stays up with me when I can't sleep, the one I can tell anything to. The one I trust.

You might think it's a tad weird that I'm the only girl in the Glade and yeah, it was at the start. Some of the boys tried using their best pickup lines on me that ultimately didn't work. I told them it was never gonna happen. But honestly, I see them all as brothers, they are my family.

My attention is drawn from the wall and over to the homestead by Frypan calling my name, "Avery!" Though because of the distance, it sounded quiet, I'm surprised I heard it.

"Yeah?" I called back, confused on why he wanted me. When he didn't reply, I let out a huff and began to run towards the homestead. What could this boy possibly want?

My run then turned into a slow jog as I got closer to the dark-skinned boy, "what's up?" I asked once I arrived in front of him.

I feel something being shoved into my hands as I finished the question; looking down I saw a bowl full of some type of slosh looking thing. We never knew what to call it, but it had oats and milk in it. It was my favourite. "You always miss breakfast; thought you would want some today." He smiled.

A grin spread across my face as I looked up at the boy, "Thanks, Frypan." I breathe and give the boy a quick hug before making my way to the tables.

I saw Minho sitting in the corner with a few of the other boys, so I decided to sit with him, due to him having a bored look on his face. I make my way beside him and slide onto the seat. "Hey, Aves." He breathes while looking over to me. "Save me from this conversation? Gally is being boring."
