Kalopsia
(n.) the delusion of things being more beautiful than they really are

The girl looked oddly familiar; I had helped the Med jacks bring her to where all of the sick normally stay, where I have woken up in more than a few times. She was still asleep. She looked very beautiful when she slept, I wonder if that's how I sleep. The smell of dew still filled the room and the specks of light coming through the walls casted patterns onto my face. I sat beside her bed as Clint and Jeff worked away, trying anything to wake her up, they had said they don't know what's wrong with her. That they might have begun feeding her soft mush if she doesn't wake up, hydrating her with a tube. A worried look came across my face as I looked back down at the girl.

I reached down and brushed some of the stray hairs away from her face, revealing her pale face with pale freckles scattering her cheeks. Her eyelashes were long, and she looked very peaceful.

Why don't I look like that?

My eyebrows furrowed at the question I had asked myself; I had never seen another girl before so, I just... I don't know... My attention was drawn to the room beside the one I was in by the coughing and almost seizing of Alby. I stood up and walked over to the room he was in, making sure that I retrieved the water bottle from the side table. I stood over the older boy who was strapped down and a sad look came over my face. This is the boy I was so terrified of... now look at him, weak, and on the verge of death. "Be careful in there, Aves." I heard Clint call out to me through the wall, "He's dangerous right now..."

I nodded at the comment, understanding that he could do the same to me as what Ben had done, "I got it..." I say and I gently put the bottle to his lips, as he took a few sips, I watched as his eyes stared into mine. I pulled the bottle back thinking he was done and finished but I was wrong. He hadn't drunk any. Instead, he held it in his mouth and while I was taking the bottle away, he violently spat it out at me; the water and saliva spraying my face and covering my clothes. Anger had taken over me, though I knew he couldn't really help it, maybe I didn't want to take my anger out on him, maybe on someone else, someone like Ben but he wasn't here and Alby, at the moment, is the closest thing to Ben. "You complete, Arse! Shuck you! I hat-" I began to storm forward my arm raised to hit the boy, but I got stopped by someone grabbing my wrist from behind.

I whip around and see Thomas and my face softened, "Hey..." He breathed, "Don't..." He said as I turned back to Alby for a moment before Thomas pulled me gently back into the room with the girl. I noticed at Minho and Newt were also there, I looked down as i returned to my seat; Jeff handing me a rag in the process, to wipe my face.

"What's going on?" Newt said has he looked at the unconscious girl and then to me, "What happened to you?"

"In a word, Alby." I say bitterly as I continue to wipe my face.

Newt directs his next question to Jeff, "Well, why won't she wake up?" He said while looking between the girl and the boy.

"Look man, I got my job the same way as you..." Was all Jeff could say.

Thomas stared down at the girl, seeming as though he would do anything to try and figure out who this girl was; that caught Newts attention. "What? Do you recognise her?" He asked Thomas.

I do.

Thomas looked at the girl again before answering, "N- No..."

"Really? Because she seemed to recognise you" Newt said as he looked back down at the girl. I zoned out the conversation, not really wanting to pay attention to it, I was more focused on the girl. Where had I seen her before? It's not like I've seen her in the Glade before. Maybe before the maze? But why am I only beginning to remember now?

Ever since Thomas entered the Glade, I've been beginning to remember things, and it seems as though he has been too. I still do need to talk to him about that, I begin to turn around to face the boy, "Hey Thoma-" I stop speaking as I realise, he wasn't there, neither was Minho, just Newt. "Oh... Never mind." I breathe as I begin to slowly turn back to the girl.

"Avery." Newt says getting my attention, I turn back and see the boy with his arms crossed.

"Newt." I say sounding surprised, "Didn't even see you there... How have you be-"

"You. Me. Outside." He says while turning and walking out of the room, he turns back when he's at the entrance to the building. "Now."

I let out a huff as I reluctantly get out of the chair and walk out of the room and into the outside world, well, the Glade. I turn and see Newt standing a few meters away from the Homestead, so I walk over to him. "Yes...?" I say once I arrive to him, and he begins to walk into the Homestead and over to his hammock; sitting down once he gets there. "Newt, you aren't really living up to your nickname." I say as I walk over and flop onto my hammock beside his.

"Well, you've been the one avoiding me, Avery." He says abruptly. "And - And I want to know why." He says, "Is it because I kissed you? I mean, you seemed to like it, since you kissed me back-"

"I don't know, Newt." I let out a little loudly, my eyes widen as I raised my voice. "Look... I'm sorry." I say a little more hushed.

"Do you not like me?" He said sounding like a hurt puppy, his face matched the analogy, "What did I do wrong?"

"You did nothing wrong..." I say while standing up and sitting on the same hammock as Newt, my hand cupping his cheek, "You're perfect..."

"So are you..." He said while placing his hand on mine and rubbing my cheek with his thumb, "Just tell me, why have you been avoiding me?"

I sighed at the question, "Newt, you've known me for a while, you've got to know, that sometimes I have a little trouble expressing what I'm feeling." I breathe as he nods, "Look, I can't stop thinking about the fact, that if we continue to... do whatever this... is... I won't have a best friend..."

A look of realisation comes across the boy's face as I look down, to see our fingers intertwined. "Avery... I'm still going to be your best friend..." He says while lifting my chin up, "I'll just be a really good best friend." He grins, causing a smile to grace my lips.

"You already are that." I say softly, as I notice as he begins to lean down to me.

"Well, I'll be extra, good..." He breathes right before our lips connect. I close my eyes and together we deepen the kiss, this was soft and slow, unlike our first kiss. This... This was one hundred times better. One of Newts hands softly holds the back of my head while mine caresses his cheek. We slowly pull away from each other and open our eyes, "Just tell me... Do you like me like that?"

"Of course, I do." I say, then I remember the girl, in the med shack, "The girl..." I say abruptly, "She's very beautiful. Isn't she?"

Newt looked taken aback, almost offended that I had said that, "Avery."

"Answer the question, Newt..." I say while looking into his eyes, waiting for his answer.

"Yes, she is... pretty," he lets out finally.

"Well-"

"But." He cuts me off while cupping my face with both hands, "You're... Gorgeous..." He finishes as his eyes drift over my face as mine do his, a small smile spread across my face as I realised what he had said. He thinks I'm pretty...
