✧・゚: Chapter 1 - Enchanted *:・゚✧

15th of December 1760

The sun barely graced the horizon with its appearance as I dragged myself out of bed. The Irish countryside glowing orange with the early morning sun. The sound of stomping hooves crying out for breakfast rang through the vast farmhouse. I quickly lit my bedside lamp, as I made my way to the dressing screen, the lantern swinging gently with each step I took.

Sighing, my eyes scanned over the outfits that lay nestled neatly, in my small wardrobe. I settled on my regular, simple, beige dress; I knew I would have opportune time to change before the busy afternoon with the business ahead.

Finally dressed, I slipped on some simple, black leather, work boots and headed out to the stable yard, following the warm glow emanating from it, as the lantern light flickered slightly, attacked by the cool December breeze. The scent of fresh haybales filled my nostrils, and the sound of hungry horses grew stronger. I soon saw my mother filling up the racks with hay, leaving a trail of satisfied horses behind her.

I walked over to the feed room, and carefully pulled out a wheelbarrow and shavings fork, placing it in the wheelbarrow, I started the dirty work; emptying out the dirty sawdust and replacing it with a fresh, plump bed of clean shavings and cleaning out water buckets, removing the stray hay that the horses had dunked into their waterbucket.

My mum laughed, as she saw me carrying two full water buckets at once.

"So much for a man's work Y/N."

My mother was different, ever since my father died, she had taken care of the horses with me by her side. Simply remaining non-compliant with the concept of gender normalities. She raised me to believe that work was not divided by gender, and I truly loved her for it.

"As you have said many times before mother." I grinned back, chuckling.

"I expect you will stop putting off bringing in this years foal from the field now Y/N" She said pointedly.

"You know that the weather is getting colder now, and we want mother and baby safe and happy" I sighed, laughing slightly.

"Don't worry mother, I'll do that now and then I'll undergo preparations for this afternoon."

"That sounds like a plan Y/N! I'm going to start preparing the carriage and harnesses, I'll leave the horse whispering to you."

Chuckling, I picked up a leather harness and rope contemplating how I would go about catching a mare, and frisky foal.

Bolting the stable door, I sighed as the foal began rolling around in the fresh, clean, shavings. The mare gently nudged the child with her nose; I had always marvelled in how gentle this mare was - she was an excellent mother.
