IT'S THE PERFECT September weather for college move in day. The temperature is perfect, the sun is beaming bright, and no clouds in the sky. Just perfect.
After my four hour drive from home to school I have safely arrived to my destination and my new home for the next four years. Taking in the beautiful scenery behind the wheel of my brand new car (a Jeep Wrangler—graduation gift from both my parents and grandparents) I drive around in search of my dorm Brentwood Hall.
One of the best things about Calvary is the campus—characterized by quads and open spaces, limestone buildings ancient and historic. Situated on a hill in the small town of Roanoke with a gorgeous view of Vermont's Green Mountains to the east and New York's Adirondack Mountains to the west.
When I was offered a dance scholarship for Calvary University I was definitely at a loss for words. Even though majoring as a dancer wasn't in my plans, I reconsidered for my scholarship. It was an excellent opportunity.
I've danced ballet since I can remember and it's something I love to do, I just never dreamed to make that my career.
During middle school and high school some of us students would read to the pre k and kindergarten students as special assignments and extra credit and I always looked forward to it. It took me a while but in the end I realized how much I truly loved working with kids and that's when I decided that I wanted to pursue it as a career.
My parents never pressured me into doing something that I wasn't happy with. They've always been supportive so choosing to come here and explore both my dancing and education was a decision they both let me make on my own and till now I'm very happy about it.
I pull into the building parking lot, and search for the closest parking spot to the door. A few students have already took all the good ones with their cars and their parents as well. So I settle for a spot and kill my engine.
Before jumping out the car, I pull my phone out and remember to send my parents a quick text to let them know I made it just fine.
Don't need them freaking out on me.
Stepping out of my car, I open my trunk and get two bags off for now. I didn't bring very many things but definitely a good amount of clothes and shoes. And from the looks of it, I'm the only one here with the less amount of things. I see students pulling out stuffed animals, mini fridges, along with other large things that will only take up space.
Making my way into the building I walk through the massive oak doors and head straight for the elevator and up to the fifth floor.
When I finally decided on the University I wanted to attend, my parents quickly had me apply for the apartments on campus that way I would have my own room at least—luckily, I was approved—and I'll be sharing a small suite with another girl named Alice.
I step out of the elevator, into the hallway to find it crowded with newcomers and their belongings. I manage to squeeze my way through, in search for my suite number B-214.
When I reach my room, I use my key card to unlock the door and walk inside. "Hello?" I raise my voice but there's no response.
In a pleasant surprise my mouth parts as I take in the view. To my right the common area is small but good enough to have a small two seater couch, a book shelf, and a flat screen hooked on a brick wall. It extends into the kitchen, which is to my left. The kitchen space is tiny but it has a decent size fridge, stove and microwave. At the end of the kitchen there's an opened empty room, covered in white walls with two small windows that open. Walking back towards the common area there are two other doors. I push one of the doors opened to find another empty room. Much like the first room I saw, the walls are also white except one of the walls is covered in brick just like the common area and only has one window. Next to the room I open the third door to find our very own bathroom—it's small and basic but at least has a tub—and honestly I couldn't be happier! I only have to share a bathroom with one person.
