Doctor Mullens was nosing around the supply room. He was looking for something specific, female sanitary supplies. He was sure that there were more woman in the community that were fertile, and he was sure that some nights he heard a baby crying. He never found any infant supplies, but he had found childhood disease vaccines and vitamin k vials in the medical supplies. Strange for a group of people ranging from 25 to 78. When he found the sanitary supplies he counted them, then made a small mark on the bottom of each one.
"Doc you in here" Trixie was calling from the door. "Yeah, trying to find more disinfectant for the infirmary." She came around the corner, "It's over there." She pointed. Fetching a bottle from the shelve he turned, "Very well, patients today?" She shook her head. "Well then what are you going to do today?" She shrugged, it had been a couple weeks since Kaleb had left and she was trying to keep her mind off him. "I think I'm going to go fish off the dock." His eye brows raised, "Good fishing here? I haven't been fishing since I was a boy." Trixie tried to mull it over in her head, but her impulsiveness hadn't improved, "You can come if you want, we have plenty of poles." "I think I will."
The autumn air had grown crisp these last few days. Trixie and the doctor sat on the dock together, poles in the water. "This is a decent river, it flows slow." He stated. "It's really nice in the summer, we have been coming down here since we were children. The doctor smiled at her, "I suppose you out swim everyone as well." Trixie felt a bit embarrassed, "No Doc, I can't swim. Never learned." He looked at her shocked, "Really? Miss I can do anything, can't swim." She laughed at this. "I come off that way?" Looking at her out of the corner of his eye, "A little know it all? All the time." She looked out at her pole, it jiggled a little.
After putting the fish in the bucket and rebaiting her line she threw it out again, "Doc how old are you?" He turned and smiled at her, he was no longer clean shaven. Dark stubble covered his face, he looked older. "29, why how old did you think I was?" She smiled and shrugged, "At first I thought you were younger than me. It's hard for me to think that you're so close to my age and a doctor, if my dad had taken me with. I could have been a real doctor by now." He shook his head, "No Trixie, you would have been a lab rat your whole life." He was right, maybe that's why her dad had left her. "It's a shame." He broke her out of her thought, "What's a shame?" Smiling deviously he said, "I thought you were asking because you had a little crush on me." She laughed, accidently. He smiled surprised and laughed too, "Ouch." "No, Doc. Nothing like that. I mean you're good looking, but, I. Uh, Jesus." She couldn't keep her thoughts straight, she shook her head at herself and giggled, "Wow, the things that fall out of my mouth lately." She stared ahead at her pole, smiling like an idiot. He let out a low laugh and nudged her with his shoulder, "So I'm good looking huh?" "Oh God just forget I said anything."
Throughout the course of the afternoon they caught several fish, not enough to feed everyone, but since everyone took turns they could freeze them for later use. Picking up their supplied the Doc turned to her, "You want to learn how to swim?" She squinted at him, "Have you lost your mind? That water is freezing right now." He puffed up his chest, "I was built for the cold." Shaking her head at him she smiled, "Go for it Doc, you are crazy." He grabbed her hand, his brown eyes locked on hers, "Come with me." What was going on in her head? Why was she even considering it. And why the hell was she looking at him like that. All these things ran through her mind as she stood motionless.
"If it's because you don't trust me, just remember, you would never be any use to me dead. I won't let you drown." She looked at him astonished, he was right, but that's not what she was thinking. "Nice pep talk Doc, real creepy." He sighed and flashed a smile, "Just in case you think I'm plotting something nefarious." "Are you plotting?" His hand tightened slightly as he pulled her closer to him, "Yeah, plotting to teach you to swim."
