Thirteen

Mitch hasn't been to work in three days now. I've called and called. No answer. I'm starting to worry...

"Mitch! You're here. And alive!" I ran over to Mitch and embraced him. He relaxed into my chest and sighed, wrapping his arms around me, "What happened?" I asked, releasing him from my grip.

"I was in the hospital. I'm sorry. I should've called."

"Well, it's alright. I don't care that you didn't call. Why the hell were you in the hospital?"

"I got shoved down the stairs." He quietly said as he walked over to his chair.

"Shoved? By who?"

"It doesn't matter. I'm alive and that's all I care about."

"Me too, Mitch, but who the hell would shove you down the stairs? What stairs?"

"The stairs in my house."

"He did it to you, didn't he? Your husband."

"It was an accident, sorta. I was yelling at him for not coming home and watching our son. He left that night he beat me and came back at one in the morning the next day. Andrew was left home by himself. All he did was turn around and shove me on accident."

"How in the hell do you shove your husband down the stairs on accident? Did he even stay at the hospital with you? Or maybe apologize?"

"None of the above. He brought Andrew and left him there with me, which I appreciated. But no, he didn't care he shoved me."

"The doctors didn't ask what happened?"

"They did. They asked if he did it to me and I told them no, that I just tripped and fell. Andrew watched it happen so when Joel walked away from me, he called the ambulance."

"Joel didn't even pick you up?"

"No. He continued upstairs. I don't care, Scott. I'm not dead and I still have my son so I'm okay. I don't wanna tell the police he did it, or did anything to me. He's a good guy underneath all the abuse."

"I doubt it." He stood up from his chair and set his hands on my desk.

"You don't know him, Scott. You haven't been there through our whole relationship. He's an amazing guy. Don't talk about my husband like you know exactly how he is." He walked out of the office leaving me speechless.
