Eva, Miss Noc's Fabric Shop, Outer City, 2:17 pm
Eva sipped the herbal tea that Miss Noc forced into her hands. She curled around the warm mug, keeping her eyes on the floor but ears on the conversation. She hoped that if she clutched the mug harder her hands would stop shaking.
"Then Kage threw the plate at her and all hell broke loose," Jasper had been explaining to Miss Noc how they got in their current situation. He started from the attack last night and had finished with their escape from Lady Nectar. Thankfully, he avoided mentioning Kai's high status.
Miss Noc nodded intently, she never interrupted Jasper. "That sounds quite tiring. Don't worry now chicks, you're all safe here with us."
Jasper smiled kindly at her. "Thank you Miss Noc, you have no idea how thankful we are for your gratitude."
The others nodded and said thanks along with him. Eva kept her moth shut.
They all sat there in a comfortable silence. Sipping the strong herbal tea and taking in the cluttered room. Old and worn books, glass trinkets, thick candles and photo frames were piled onto the numerous bookshelves, it gave the room a sense of old knowledge. Annotated diagrams of organs, muscles and skeletons were strung on any wall space, Eva guessed they belonged to Doctor Funer.
There were multiple doorways branching out of the room they were in, Eva guessed that this was the main room for this floor. There were at least another three floors below them. Miss Noc inspected all of them, Eva avoided her eyes and kept drinking her tea.
Doctor Funer appeared in the doorway, wiping her bloody hands with a cloth. "So there was a lot more blood than I expected."
Eva felt all her Squad including Kai tense up. Jackson was the first to speak. "Is he okay?"
"He'll be fine, Jackson, just needs some sleep. You lot run him into the ground, he wouldn't let me stitch him up. I had to wait for him to pass out," Doctor Funer tutted as she walked out of the room.
Jackson sent Jasper a curious expression, one brow raised. "How does she know my name?"
"Jasper has told us a few stories of his time in the army, and informed us both of all your strengths. I am very proud of all your skills," Miss Noc said. Eva felt her heart clench, someone she never met was proud of her.
Jacksons curious glare turned dark. "Stories, huh?"
"Only the good ones," Jasper smiled back.
Doctor Funer returned, she had ditched her white lab coat for a black cardigan and brown trousers. She was holding a large mug of tea that fogged up her round glasses as she walked over to where her wife was perched. Doctor Funer took a long drink from the mug then slowly raked her yellow eyes over all of them. She locked eyes with Eva, the corner of her mouth pulled up.
"Oh, Your Highness, that is a surprise," Doctor Funer said.
Lyn, Jasper and Kai choked on their tea. Kai was the first to respond. "I'm sorry ma'am, but you must be confused."
He's actually trying to deny it? Eva was amazed at how Kai's personality has changed in just a few hours.
"Jasper has told us multiple times that he only has five other fledglings in his Squad. I also know what each Orphan Squad is made up of six orphans and one commander. Now after what Jasper told us about what happened last night, it wasn't hard to connect the dots. I know a Peregrine when I see one, and Jas isn't a very good liar," Doctor Funer said over the rim of her mug.
