They're in middle school in this one.

*Brendon's POV* (1.6k+ words)

A loud ring sounds through the speakers indicating the end of class and the start of lunch break.

Everyone stands up from their seats, quickly leaving the classroom. I don't.

Instead I just cross my arms over my desk and rest my head on them. What's the point of getting out for lunch if I have no one to talk to today?

For some reason Ryan —my only and very very best friend— didn't come to school.

He knows he has to let me know firsthand he's not gonna come, that way I can mentally prepare myself for it, to be left all alone at school.

But he clearly didn't. I was waiting for him by the gates as always, but he didn't show up.

Also, today's Friday. We always walk to either mine or his house to play video games all day long —our parents think we're just smart kids doing their homework, but they don't need to know that.

"Brendon," Our math teacher, Mrs. Orzechowski interrupts my train of thought. I lift my head to catch her already looking at me.

"Yes, ma'am?" I rub my eyes and I sit straight on my chair.

"Why don't you go out for lunch?" She asks softly. I like her, she's so sweet and actually cares for us. That's why I stayed here without worrying about being kicked out.

"Dunno," I shrug and don't tell her the reason why "Can I stay here for a while? I mean until next class?"

"Aren't you hungry?" She asks standing up of her desk and I shrug again.

"Brendon, you should eat something. But if you want to you can stay here, I'll be in the teacher's room in case you need anything." She smiles and waves at me, grabs her phone and next thing she's out of the classroom.

I smile back, and when she's out I let out a sigh and then go back to my laying position.

The walk home is boring.

I just look at the ground the whole time. Only looking up when I need to cross a street.

My house is a couple blocks away from the school so it doesn't take too long to arrive home.

Weird.

What is my mom doing here at this hour? Isn't she at work?

The car is parked in the driveway and the lights inside the house are on.

I climb up the porch stairs and I bring up my keys from my bag pocket. And when I'm about to insert the key the door opens.

"Hey sweetheart, come in, I was waiting for you." My mom greets me and lets me in.

"Hi mom. Why? What's happening?" I ask placing my bag on the sofa.

"Oh don't worry, nothing serious." He grabs the car keys and turns off the lights. "C'mon, let's go."
