It was almost midnight. Carter, Josh, and I were at Carter's motel, helping him pack and cram everything into my car. Josh held onto Hayley and kept her from getting in the way while Carter and I ran back and forth.
As soon as the motel room was empty, we drove to my house. Carter and I were in my car and Josh drove behind us with Hayley. My mom and dad were waiting on the porch, ready to help us move things inside the house.
We carried Carter's stuff to the room beside mine while Hayley and Gerard reunited. They fell asleep before we finished moving things. As Carter and my dad took the last two boxes and my mom went to the kitchen to reheat our dinner, I said goodbye to Josh outside.
" If you or Carter need anything, don't hesitate to call," He said, holding both of my hands. " I'll talk to Aidan, he has to accept Carter one way or another. Bye," He said, kissing my jaw swiftly. He pulled away, leaving the air around us distorted.
" Wait-" I took his hand again.
" Yeah?"
I leaned in, panicking at the sudden rush of confidence I felt. He held my chin with his thumb and index finger, placing a small butterfly kiss on my lips before we really kissed. It was the furthest thing from romantic and I realized that every movie and book kiss was a lie.
Our height differences were the first problem. He had to lean down a little. Our noses kept bumping and we had no idea what we were doing. If my parents were watching, they were doing a great job at keeping their laughter in. I knew that despite the mess, this meant the world to us.
Josh pulled away with a smile on his face and I saw my reflection in his clear brown eyes. My cheeks were pink and I was smiling.
" Goodnight," He said, kissing my cheek.
I returned the favor before he left and I went inside. We were such an odd couple. We had been dating for three weeks and all we've done was shared an awkward kiss.
I walked into the kitchen and saw Carter helping my mom at the stove while my dad called the cats to feed them.
When our dinner was ready, Carter sat down beside me and I kept noticing how happy he was. He knew he'd won my parent's hearts over as soon as he volunteered to help with dinner and I started feeling like they'd eventually get used to having him here.
After cleaning everything up and getting ready for bed, I realized that it was a school night and it was almost two in the morning.
I visited Carter in his new room, taking notice of how quickly he turned his phone off.
" Thanks for everything," He said.
" No problem. You'd the same for anyone," I said.
" Hey, now we can have more guitar lessons," He said as his phone vibrated and he smiled.
" Yeah, you're practically my brother," I said, mentally frowning at the weak comparison between us. I was a potato next to him. " I'm going to sleep. Goodnight," I said and retreated to my room. And
I laid in my bed and listened to Carter's phone vibrating while I hoped Aidan would be okay with everything. I hoped Drea's Last Words would go back to normal, with the exception of me and Josh being together.
Carter let out a laugh and I wondered who he was texting. Was there a guy in his life he wasn't mentioning?
I'd have to do some snooping around.
