Chapter 17

P.O.V/ Alex Porter

They say New years is a time to start over with a clean slate because it's a new year so there should be a new you. well there is no reason for me to have one because I was already granted a clean slate at life literally I'm going on twenty- one this year my Dad, Xander died on his twenty-fourth birthday back in 1994 four months before I was born Avery was only two years old at the time. my mom, Dana was twenty-four as well and very pregnant with me I have always wondered what happened to my Dad back then they never spoke about it neither did Avery because she didn't know what happened that fateful day. it's New years eve at my house it's about 1:00pm Nicole gets out of class at 2:00pm I'm waiting on my mom to come over she's bringing the beer since I'm not old enough to buy it yet even under a magical disguise I know it seems wrong for my mom to buy me alcohol but she knows I'm very responsible so she trusts me. I'm cleaning up mine and Nicole's bedroom putting a small pile of clothes in the dirty clothes hamper as I'm passing my side of the bed on the left I pick up an empty Gatorade bottle of my night stand.
As I'm coming out of the room going right down the hallway past the laundry room that is on the left side of the hallway I walk into the kitchen and toss the empty bottle into the trash can. I feel this warm presence that makes me feel safe as I sense my mom's presence outside the house the door bell rings shortly after I make my way out of the kitchen all the way down the hallway and into the living room I pass by the grey couch that has a glass table in front of it that has a metal frame holding in together. I turn the knob opening the door there stands my mom with a 24 case of bud light beer bottles in her arms I open the glass door and get the case from her carrying it by handles made into the box I walk into the kitchen as she follows me she opens the fridge for me while I place the case on the top shelf. I close the door and look up at my mom; she is 5"10' just a little bit taller than me Avery is short about 5"4' while my Dad is tall too he is 5"11' my mom is a red head with hazel green eyes so if you were to see her with me and Avery you couldn't tell we are her daughters because we both look like our Dad.
We walk outside in the backyard as we are standing there looking out at the beautiful view my mom pulls a pack of Marlboro lights she pulls one out sliding the box back into the front pocket of her dark blue jeans she lights the cigarette with a red lighter. she is wearing a female black leather jacket with a grey v-neck Harley Davidson t-shirt with her blue jeans she's wearing a pair of grey and black Nike air max running shoes for women. she takes a hit off her cigarette I said " Have you heard from Dad today?" she looks at me and said " He texted me this morning telling me good morning". I said " How are you two?" she ashes her cigarette then said " We're fine he understands why I just want to be friends". I said " Do you want to get back together with him?" I see her thinking She said " I don't know it's been seventeen years since he " left" I wouldn't even know where to start I'm still traumatized over the day he died". I said " What happened? nobody has ever told me not even him". She said " Well it was his twenty-fourth birthday and tomorrow was the fourth of July so he wanted to get some fireworks to shoot off to entertain Avery he got home from work about three that day so we drove over to the firework store we go inside and pick out some but when we got the counter your Dad noticed he forgot his wallet in the car so he went back outside to get it.."
She stops talking abruptly I see tears in her eyes I said " It's okay you don't have to finish". She said as she wiped a tear off her face " No it's time you know what happened." She continued " He gets his wallet from the car and comes back inside the store with me and the clerk. he payed for the fireworks and we walked out of the store as he carried the bag of fireworks I opened the trunk and he puts the bag in and closed it next thing I know I feel the barrel of a pistol to the side of my head right at the temple. I froze in fear as I see a man in a black ski mask pointing a black sawed off shotgun in your Dad's face the man with pistol puts his arm around my neck holding me hostage I feel him put the barrel of the pistol on my stomach right where I could feel you. your Dad sees the gun to my stomach he has his hands up He said " Please don't hurt them.." the man with shotgun said " As long you listen they will live. give us all your money now!". your Dad said " My wallet is in my back pocket I have $500 dollars left". the man reaches in your Dad's back pocket and pulls the money out he threw the wallet on the ground. the man with the pistol says to me " Where's your money Red?" I said " My purse is in the car in the passenger floorboard there is $140 bucks in my wallet". the man with the pistol said to the other one " Watch them". he snatches the keys out of my hand"..
She continued " He unlocks the car and reaches in he dumps my purse out and gets the money out of my wallet. he closes the door and walks up behind me He said " You're coming with me". my heart sank in fear your Dad said " Like hell she is!" the men laughed evilly the man with the pistol points the gun at your Dad and said " Shut the fuck up! I said she is coming with me! I love me a pretty red head". I cringed as I felt him touch my stomach when he did you moved. He said to me " What is it? a boy or a girl?" I told him " It's a girl". the people in the store where being held up by other men at gun point so nobody could help us or even call the police. I feel the man pulling me back with his hand on my wrist the man with the shotgun takes the butt of the gun and smashes it into your Dad's stomach knocking the breath out him. he hits the ground on his knees the man cocks the shotgun points it at his chest he fires it and the shell comes out spraying these tiny metallic spheres straight into his chest blood flies out in all directions on the shooter. I just remember screaming and crying in terror as I watched him fall back on the pavement the men took off leaving me alone I got down beside him.. I held him in my arms screaming for someone to call an ambulance but it was too late he died right there in the parking lot in my arms.."
We are both crying I said " I'm so sorry that happened to you"... She said " I thank god everyday that Avery wasn't there with us.. and I thanked god that you didn't get hurt that day little did I know I'd lose you fifteen years later.. losing your Dad was bad enough especially the way I lost him but nothing compares to the pain of losing one of your children.. I woke up a week later from the coma with Avery by me and that was when she told me you didn't make it.. my life has never been the same since". I pull her into a hug and we cry I said " I promise I'll never leave you again I love you so much Mom".. She said " I love you too Alex".. we walked back inside and about 2:30pm Nicole pulls up in the driveway my mom is standing by the bay window She said " Nicole's here.. and your Dad?" I walk up beside her and see my Dad getting out of the passenger seat of the car he closes the door behind him and follows Nicole up the driveway that is in front of the white garage door that Nicole parked her car in front of they follow the side walk around the front of the house and up on the front porch.
The glass door comes open as Nicole walks in with my Dad behind her he closes the big door gently. Nicole walks up to me after hanging her backpack and jacket up on the coat racket and pulls me into a big hug I kissed her softly my mom is still standing by the bay window. my Dad walks up to her standing on the other side of the window He said " Hey how have you been?" She said " Good.. selling houses a like real estate agent does." my Dad said " I'm glad you found that job". you can cut the tension with a knife I seen Nicole's eyes looking glassy. She feels that she needs her dose of blood She said " I'll be right back". She walks past the glass table and the couch directly down the hallway into the kitchen where I hear the door to the fridge open. I walk over to the glass table to give my mom and dad some space alone I sit down on the couch and I hear Nicole walking back from the kitchen she sits down beside me and lays back with her head in my lap she looks up at me smiling softly I smile back at her I run my hand through her black hair that lays on her shoulders. the sun light comes through the bay window and shines into Nicole's brown eyes they glow like honey I admire her beauty she blushes at me.
I look up at my mom and dad they have been talking but I haven't been paying attention until now I watch as my dad pulls something out of the front pocket of his black and white checkered long sleeve flannel he's wearing a black leather motorcycle jacket over it, he's wearing a pair of dark blue American eagle jeans the slim straight kind not skinny jeans with white, grey and black Nike air maxes the shoe strings are grey the shoes are half white with grey and black trim around the sole. he opens his hand and thin gold chain dangles from his fingers it's says Dana in pretty cursive she smiles friendly and said as her eyes teared up a little " It's beautiful Xander". he unlocks the clasp and gently puts his hands behind her neck as she holds up her beautiful long red hair off her neck they look each other in the eyes I see the sun reflect into my mom's eyes and it makes them brighter. my dad slowly runs his hand through her hair after he put the neck lace on her He said " You are so beautiful Dana". She blushes and said " Thank you". after their cute flirting Riley and Dani show up at the door knocking I looked at Nicole and said " Riley and Dani are here". my dad opens the door and they are surprised to see him they haven't seen him since Adrian turned Avery evil.
Riley said " Hey Xander long time no see". He said " Yeah it's been a few months". Dani closes the door my mom walks into the kitchen I wait a few minutes then I follow her in there she is standing in front of two kitchen windows drinking a beer. I open the door on the fridge and pull out a beer twisting the cap off and tossing it in the trash can behind her I take a drink after swallowing the beer I said " Are you okay?" she takes a drink of her beer then said " Yeah it's just hard your Dad is being so nice to me like he's always been and I'm being this bitch who can't forgive him over something he had no control over". I said " Nicole was feeling the same way about me when I first came back when she was with Riley. she was hurt and angry because I left her for six months making her think I was dead except for I didn't leave her for seventeen years I know it's very hard to deal with but he loves you so much and never stopped the entire time he was gone I really hope you two can get back together like Nicole and I did they say true never dies". I heard the door open and I hear Jesse's voice along with Jane's me and my mom walk back in the living room.
Jesse, Jane, Sam , Valerie, Avery, Jenny and Cheyenne just got here so we all hang out for New year's eve we take the party outside to the backyard where we all play a game called Horse shoe basically it's a lawn game where you and your partner are standing 40 feet apart with a small metal pole sticking up out of the ground there are simply two ways to score by throwing " ringers" or by throwing the horseshoe nearest to the stake, a ringer is a horseshoe that has been thrown in such a way that is completely encircles the stake. first Nicole and I went I got one ringer and she got two, then my mom and dad went and she won against my dad as Riley and Dani were playing an ominous cold chill comes across the air making everyone shiver except Nicole, Jesse, Jane and Cheyenne cause they are vampires and are cold to the touch. I look over at the opening that shows the outlook of the mountains several feet away from the hill that leads down to the creek black smoke starts swirling in front of the opening a hooded figure appears from the black smoke it has it's head down then it slowly raises it up looking dead at all of us with a skeleton like face there is a big scythe in it's right hand on the blade it says Dizon.
I immediately feel this very bad feeling come over me that is the grim reaper the one thing in this world that I can't stop Jesse and Jane's eyes grew wide as they see him but there is no possible way he could take them or even Nicole and Cheyenne because they are undead even though me and my Dad are dead he could still take us because we have a heart that beats unlike them. I motion for everyone to stay back and I slowly approach him standing about three feet away so that I'm not right in his face I swallow nervously and said " Is there some reason why you are here on my property?" his eyes are cold as he stares at me with this ominous look you can almost see his eye sockets underneath his eyes. He said in this ominous calm tone " I've come for the Guardian-Angel Witch". I said " Is it me you want?" He said " No my dear but your time will come I've come for him". I look back at my dad he is the only male here I see the look in my dad's eyes it's a look of worry I look back at the grim reaper I said as my eyes teared up " Please don't take him he's my father.. take me instead".
He said " It's not your time Alex. it's his you know better than to try and stop me because you can't". I said as tears streamed down my face " Please don't do this.. I can't lose him".. an hour glass teleports in his hand he turns it upside down and the sand slowly starts falling He said as he handed me the hour glass " You have twenty-four hours with him when the clock strikes midnight he's coming with me and that's final". black smoke swirls on him and he disappears into thin air. I turn around with the hour glass in my hands I look at my dad who is shocked and crying I walked up to him said " I am so sorry Dad I can't do anything to stop Dizon".... He said as tears fall from his eyes " It's okay sweetie nobody can do anything if he says it's my time then it is". he looks at my mom she has tears streaming down her face She said " I'm so sorry Xander..." He said " It's okay everything will be fine I will always be with you guys". I look over at Avery she is falling apart crying uncontrollably. the others go home while me, Nicole, my Mom, Dad and Avery go inside the house we all go sit in mine and Nicole's bedroom.
I sit the hour glass on the dresser that has the mirror I can still them crying my Dad is standing by the window on the right side of the dresser looking out it my mom is standing at the end of the dresser beside my dad, Avery is pacing the floor back and fowarth on the left side of the room Nicole is standing at the foot of the bed I can see her eyes were she has been crying. I pull her into a hug and cry on her shoulder after the hug I stand at the foot of the bed with Nicole I look over at my parents they can't stop crying my Mom said " Why do I feel like this is my fault?... if I would have just forgiven you then may this wouldn't be happening"... my Dad said " No Dana this isn't your fault you have every right to be angry with me... I left you for seventeen years all alone to raise two girls on your own it's my fault.. I'm just so thankful for Jason if he hadn't of found me my girls would still not know who their father is you done such an amazing job raising them they are so beautiful and so independent".. my Mom said as she cried " I can't lose you again Xander... I love you..." He said as he cried " I love you too baby"...
He pulls her into a big hug and they cry he looks her in the eyes as he holds her hands and pulls her into a soft passionate kiss she cries as she kisses him back. this is killing me, Avery and Nicole as we watch and cry we all stay up late eventually going to bed Nicole and I slept in our bed while Avery slept on the couch, my mom and dad were still up talking when we went to bed. I wake up that morning about 7:00am Nicole is awake laying on her side looking at me I smile softly she puts her hand on my face and kisses me softly after a few minutes we get up and shower together. after our shower we got out and put clothes on I'm wearing a white aeropostale t-shirt with black letters down the right side of the shirt over the t-shirt I'm wearing a long sleeve plaid shirt for women that is open it's the color violet with black and sky blue checkered patterns and white lines through it with dark blue aeropostale jeans and a pair of Nike air max flyknit the color of the shoes are mostly white the Nike check is black right under it are sky blue and purple lines the soles of the shoes are two different colors the top part is dark blue while the back part is sky blue.
Nicole is wearing her black colored blue jean jacket with the black hood and the black sleeves, under the jacket she's wearing a plain white t-shirt with dark blue hollister jeans and her black Nike air max commands with the white check. I open the door to our room and walk out with Nicole behind me I turn right going down the hallway into the living room where Avery is awake she is folding the grey blanket she was using I notice my mom and dad aren't in here so I go down the hallway and on the right side of the hallway beside the laundry room is an extra room with a bed and an office desk. I easily open the door praying and hoping they are dressed I look through the cracked door and see my dad asleep on his back with my mom fast asleep on his chest I see her black frame glasses on the night stand beside the bed they are half framed the top has the black frame while the bottom part are the lens I quietly close the door back and go into the living room with Nicole and Avery about an hour later at 8:00am we hear the door open to the guest room my mom and dad come walking down the hallway and into the living room.
we all went out of the house just riding around in our cars Nicole drove her car with me in the passenger seat and Avery in the back seat my mom drove her 2014 Chevy cruze that is baby blue she had the same kind of car it was a 2010 grey Chevy cruze that was the one that was demolished in pile up and that was the car I died in. we drove up to the mountains and rode around which it takes an hour to drive up there and an hour to drive back we got back into town at 10:00am where we went to Jesse and Jane's house to hang out we stayed there for about five hours because we knew once we got back to my house that at midnight the grim reaper is coming to take my dad away forever and I don't know if I can handle that I've just got the chance to know him but I have no power over Dizon and I can't stop him. we went back to my house about 3:00pm where we all just tried to enjoy the time we have left with my dad about 8:00pm we have a beer together to celebrate new years the time counts down getting closer my anxiety increases as the clock says 11:59pm on the TV, the ball at time square finally drops at midnight and everyone on tv cheers as it is 2015 everyone but us my dad is about to die and I can't save him..
me and Nicole kissed as the clock struck midnight so did my mom and dad that cold ominous chill comes across the room and we all shiver I pick up the remote and turn the power off on the TV. Dizon teleports in front of the bay window as black smoke swirls on him He said in that tone " It is time Xander". I watch as the hour glass runs out of sand on the glass table in front of me and Nicole. my dad goes to move and my mom grabs his hand pulling him behind her as she guards him from Dizon my Dad said " Dana what are you doing??" She looks at Dizon and said " I'm not gonna let you take him". Dizon just stares at my mom ominously and said " Foolish human". My mom said " That's right I am human fully and what's better than a pure human soul that has done nothing but good". I said " Mom don't!" Dizon holds his hand up putting a force field around me, Nicole and Avery trapping us he puts one around my dad leaving my mom out with him I'm freaking the hell out now so is my dad. He bangs on the force field and said " Dana don't do this!!" she ignores him and Dizon said " Human life is so precious why are you willing to give yours up for this simple guardian-angel witch?" She said as she cried " Because I love him more than life it's self and I can't live without him again I refuse to.. so just take me and leave him alone please"..
Dizon is very impressed by her extreme bravery He said " Very well the human has spoken now you come with me". My dad yells " Dana No please don't do this!!" she turns around and looks at him through the force field She said as she cried " It's the only way I can save you.. I refuse to live without you again Xander..." He said as he cried " You don't think I can't live without you?! I did and it was a like living in hell! Dana please! I love you so much..." She said as Dizon pointed the scythe at her back " I love you Xander more than you will ever know but you'll understand why I did this one day". Avery and I yell " Mom!!!!!!" all the sudden she holds her heart in pain like she is having a heart attack Dizon is using his powers to stop her heart she slowly drops to her knees on the hard wood floor she falls forward on her stomach. you can see it in her eyes that she is dead Dizon still has the scythe pointed at her body her soul comes out of her body and into the blade of the scythe it glows a gold color My dad is crying in agony so is me, Avery and Nicole; Dizon teleports away.
The force fields come down and my dad frantically runs over to my mom's body and turns her over pulling her in his lap he cries in anguish as he holds her in his arms. the next day we plan her funeral to the outside world it looks like Avery is burying my mom because technically me and my dad are dead as well so none of the other humans at the funeral know that me and him are there under magical disguises. we buried her right beside my dad's headstone and right beside hers is mine where she always wanted to be about four weeks go back I feel so numb and lost without her here she gave up her life to save my dad's. I'm sitting in my living room one morning with my dad and Avery while Nicole is at school I see white lights start swirling in front of the bay window and Victor appears my boss the one who wanted to investigate the Finway Asylum. he appears and I stand up walking over to him I said " Is something wrong sir?" He said " I apologize for not calling but I have something that I believe is yours". I'm lost what does he have? he pulls out a sphere from behind his back and he twists the ball and it makes unlocking noise and out swirls white lights.
the white lights start forming a body until the face appears we are in complete shock as it reveals my mom's face and soon the rest of her body Avery and I cry uncontrollably as we see beautiful white fluffy wings attached to her back and a golden halo floating over her head she is smiling at us with the biggest smile. I said in disbelief " Sir what's going on? is she real?" He said " Yes Alex she is real." I said as I looked at her " How did this happen? she was a human.. can they be turned into guardian-angel witches??" He said " That's the reason why I saved her from Dizon because she was a human soul that died for the greater good your mom's actions was heroic and we granted her a second chance to be a guardian-angel say hello to your new charge". I'm so stunned I get to teach my mom her new powers we all are so relieved to know that she is back for good we thought she gone forever Victor smiles and teleports away by the use of white lights.
