Okay, so if you plan on playing an instrument in a concert band, please don't choose the flute. If you plan on playing in an orchestra, fine, but flute in concert band isn't a good choice.
First of all, the flute is at the top of the sound pyramid. Which means no one wants to hear it. Flute almost always gets the melody, but it's almost always shared with another instrument like the trumpets who are way louder. So you can't hear them. If you want to be heard, you have to play break-glass high notes and have to be good at them. Flutes are almost always in the front of the band, so the director sees your mistakes first. Accidentally folded your legs out of habit? The director wouldn't have seen it if the trombones or tubas in the back did that. The flute is also the easiest instrument to pass out on, because it uses the most air. You may disagree, but this is what our band director told us. We aren't wood, we don't use reeds, yet we aren't brass, string, or percussion. We're woodwinds, and that doesn't really make sense. Flute is cool, but please consider this if you wish to try it.
