in all the time I've known you
I've felt like there's a golden thread connecting us
it stretches, stretches, stretches when we're apart
but strengthens again when we're together

I haven't reached out
because I wanted to give you the space to think
just like I've done in the past week
and I think by now
I've figured out exactly how I feel

I remember things too
like why I pushed you away
and why I didn't run back like I wanted
I remember how much it hurt
and how I never want to feel that way again

but something in me still wonders
what could have been if we'd communicated better
if I hadn't been so scared of everything
and you hadn't been so scared of hurting me
where would we be now?
would the thread still be strong?
or would it have frayed and broken?

but there's still a golden thread connecting us
I want it there, I need it there
I haven't felt it break
- not yet -
and I hope that I never do
