Touching down on Tatooine you gather up what you need. And glance out at the Sandy wasteland. 'No matter where you go in space almost every planet is made out of sand.' You think to yourself, imagining how much sand you would have stuck in your boots by the end of this hunt. Finally packing everything you could possibly fathom you'd need on this job you slide yourself up onto the cargo hold table. Even through your trousers and armour you could feel the coolness of the steal upon you skin. It was calming and rather relieving as the ship starts to heat up, the harsh sun hanging above it. A few silent minutes pass before Mando appears from his quarters and trudges his way over to his weapons storage, nodding at you as he passes. The pod no longer with him.
"You really don't say much do you?" You jest from the modulator in your mask picking up your breathy chuckle.
The Mando didn't respond at first which you weren't offended by but to your surprise he stops grabbing weapons and turns to you.
"In this business you learn not to trust anyone. I've never met you before so airing on the side of caution won't hurt me."
This was the most you'd heard him say in one conversation alone and it left you a little stunned. You had been told one of your fundamental flaws was that you trust other Mando's way too quickly, it was something you couldn't help. You owe your life to them all. Taking in what he'd said you nod, respecting the fact he probably didn't want you prying. You were a lot like that when working with other bounty hunters.
"Ok so our guy was last seen leaving the local cantina not too far from here. He was headed east so I say we gather as much information as we can and then go after him...or are you a shoot first ask questions later kind of guy?" Once again you try to crack a joke and it falls flat in its face.
"We can start at the Cantina." Mando drones before opening the hatch and stepping out into the blistering sun.
Thank the maker the visor on your mask is tinted, it doesn't help a lot but with kind of sun it gave your eyes a tiny bit of relief from strain. Following after the Mando you watch him walk with strides full of confidence and self assurance. Yes the armour does give anyone a more serious and dominant presence but he seemed to tower over everything he walked by, his shoulders broad and head held high. Snapping out of your thoughts you feel your cheeks being to flush ever so slightly, you couldn't let yourself get distracted. With a hurried march you make your way into the cantina letting out a soft breath as the coolness of the shade laps over your body. Even though you've mastered your self-discipline it was only natural to sometimes want to get out of that blistering heat. All eyes drift to the two of you for a few moments, causing the cantina to fall into a quiet murmur. Approaching the bar you both slide into a stool eyes tracking the bartender in sync.
"If I didn't know any better I would have thought you were both armoured droids with how you're moving together." The bartender jokes sucking on the back of his teeth a bit, his nerves clear as day.
Funnily enough neither of you find this funny and beside you you feel Mando tensing up a bit. Clearly the bartender had struck a nerve and that wasn't ok with you. With a clearing of your throat abruptly you pull out a photo of your bounty and place it in front of you.
"What can you tell us about this man?" Your voice drops into a low serious tone wanting to make sure to make him know you weren't to be messed with, especially after this last comment.
The bartender glances at the photo with glazed eyes and slides the image back towards you. His hands visibly tremble almost making him drop the glass he had once been cleaning.
"He was here no more than a day ago. Bragging about how many people he'd just killed. His eyes were dangerous. Last I heard he was headed east and good riddance." Is all he says with a slight stammer. Nothing new.
"Thank you for your time." Mando says begrudgingly before you both slide off of your stools.
Without a word the two of you leave and as if sharing the same mind head towards a place you could acquire two speeders. The tracks would still be fresh enough with the shifting of the sands that you could track your bounty but it wasn't going to be easy, but when is it ever easy? Tossing a small pouch of credits at the man who owns the speeders you jump onto yours and start it up before glancing over at Mando who gives you a small nod. As the two of you speak off a few children of the area run out to watch the two mandalorians fly off on a hunt, excited murmurs travelling amongst them.
The ride was quiet as neither of you spoke. You take the lead, eyes scanning over the faint tracks as the start to slowly disappear into nothingness. Mando keeps his eyes on the horizon to spot any possible attacks. As you keep an eye on the foot prints you let your mind wander just enough so you don't get too distracted.
Flashback:
The cold wraps around you, an unwelcomed blanket, chilling your armour and your blood. So much for your first hunt being an easy one, the weather alone was making it worth twice the pay you were getting. You'd taken a job to find kid who'd run away from a royal family and bring them home which you didn't question but you did want to know why they would run away to a place like Hoth. It's a frozen hell scape with Wampa's, even as a Mandalorian those things freak you out.
It took you nearly three weeks and many time nearly dying in snow shifts or hypothermia to find the royal brat and get them back to your ship. They wouldn't stop complain about how unfair their life was. As if being a royal and having everything at your beck and call was a hard life. They ran away because Daddy dearest wouldn't let them throw a ball. What a child. Eventually you got tired of their meaningless complaining and gave them something real to complain about, you punched them in the nose.
Delivering them back to their home planet was the biggest relief to you, not longer having them in your care. Without missing a beat they started complaining to their parents instantly accusing you of punching them, acting as if they hadn't just run away. With a slight chuckle you raise your hands in a fake surrender.
"The kid slipped as the ship came out of light speed"
Giving you a fond smile the king tosses a hefty bag of credits to you and smiles knowing you were lying.
"Coming out of light speed can be such a disorienting thing." He comments making you grin beneath your beskar.
Not too bad for your first job.
Your POV:
Several hours pass and still you find no one. The sun's were beginning to set and you felt a wave of uneasiness wash over you. Hunting a bounty at night is never an easy thing, especially now that the tracks were gone. Calling back at Mando you shout as loud as you can to be heard over the speeder.
"I don't think we're going to find much tonight. Maybe we should stop and-"
"Look out!" Mando screams cutting you off, but by then it was too late.
As you turn your head your eye land on a perfectly aimed blaster shot hitting your speeder sending you flying over the controls with a yelp. Hurtling through the air you pull your arms close, the world spinning around you. You let yourself roll a few times as your armoured body hits the sandy ground with a thud slightly knocking the wind out of you. Without missing a beat you hand whips your blaster out of its holster aiming towards where the shot had come from. Not far from you the speeder you had once ridden on lays aflame, a charred carcass of metal. Mando was no where to be seen. You could only assume he went after the bounty. Heaving yourself up you let out a slightly winded breath before sprinting towards where your bounty must be. Cresting a large sand hill you spot Kizen and Mando in the heat of a fight. Neither of them had their blasters anymore. Swiftly running along the top of the hill you feel you breath catch as Kizen kicks Mando down the side of the sand hill, sending him tumbling. Without hesitation you shoot at Kizen hating every bone in his body. He swiftly dodges your shot and sprints at you ready to fight once again. The bartender was right his eyes were dangerous.
