Mrs. Bakare drove me to the hospital days later. We had booked an appointment with Dr. Feyi who asked us to come over in two days as she was busy. Usually, she'd have told the patients to wait a week or two before she could attend to them but since she was quite familiar with the Bakares, it was easier for me.
"Good morning, Dr. Feyi." Bimbo and her mother hugged her.
"Welcome. Have a seat." She gestured to the chairs behind her desk.
"Good morning ma." I bowed my head slightly.
"You're Adeola, right?"
"Yes ma." I took a seat.
"Don't address me as ma, jare. You'd make me feel too old." Dr. Seyi smiled. "How many months now?"
"Five."
"And I heard you've not been..." Dr. Feyi's gaze shifted to Mrs. Bakare and back to me. "How do you feel when your baby moves or kicks?"
"I..." I sighed deeply. "I don't know the feeling."
"You've never been kicked before?"
"No." I shook my head.
"Not even a movement?" Dr. Feyi asked. "It's not possible. You probably didn't notice or you've forgotten."
"How will a mother-to-be forget or not notice such thing?" I glared at her and Bimbo gave my hand a tight squeeze.
"Okay. I'm sorry." Dr. Feyi sighed. "Your womb might be quite tight and since you said you've not been exercising, there's probably no chance of your baby moving and definitely a slight breathing chance."
"What?!" Bimbo and I exclaimed.
"I'm going to lose my baby?" I asked, Cassandra's words ringing in my head. Imagine after going through all this stress, you now end up losing the baby.
Dr. Feyi chuckled. "No, you won't. We just need to check you to see how the baby is doing."
"You're going to open me up?" I definitely knew nothing about this.
Everybody in the office burst into laughter and I felt stupid.
"Are you educated?" Dr. Feyi asked, amidst laughter.
I felt more embarrassed. "I'm an Economics graduate."
"I see." Dr. Feyi walked got up from her chair and crouched in front of me.
"What do you want to do?" I asked.
Bimbo laughed. "You don't need to be scared."
"I've not done this before and no one in my family has. Everyone gave birth when I was a child." I sighed.
"Okay." Dr. Feyi removed her stethoscope from her neck. "I'm going to listen to your baby's heartbeat.
"Oh okay." I felt quite relaxed.
"What were you thinking before?" Mrs. Bakare asked.
"I don't know. Just thought it was something scary." I shrugged.
"The heartbeat is faint." Dr. Feyi got up.
"Isn't the heartbeat supposed to be faint? It's still a fetus." I asked.
"This one is actually very faint. Different from the usual." Dr. Feyi hung the stethoscope around her neck.
"What should we do now?" Mrs. Bakare asked.
"How about a ultrasound?"
"Now?" I asked.
"No." Dr. Feyi shook her head. "I'm sorry I have to meet up with a schedule right now and besides the machine is in use."
