An idea popped up in my mind. I opened up my University class group chat. We still connected with eachother even after graduation and everyone reached out and helped others.
I typed. "Please who lives anywhere in Lekki?"
I waited a while before I received notifications. I felt exhilarated to know these people were more than willing to help. These are your friends. Not Remi.
I opened the chat to see tons of insults.
"Ashawo."
"Big mouth."
"Ole."
"They chased you out of your house abi?"
"She got pregnant and they ditched her?"
"What's the name of the person that ditched her?"
"I heard it is Damba."
"Is that even a name?"
"It's probably his nick."
"What's his real name?"
"Nobody knows, not even her." This came from Remi.
Comments kept flowing in the group chat that irritated me.
"Wait, that's Adeola? The one that was always forming Holy girl?"
"Yes oh. She refused to date fine guys like us and went after a beast."
"I'm sure he's ugly."
"No, he's not." Remi said.
Few minutes after she sent that message, she sent Damba's pictures to the group. I saw his beautiful face again after a long time. I smiled. It made me feel better at least, all these hateful comments had me wishing that the ground opens up and swallows me.
I mustered the courage to type on the group. "I just need a place for today. It's late and I'm standing out on the streets. Please help me if I've ever been good to you."
I got more hate comments.
"So you will sleep with our Husbands, Fathers, Brothers or boyfriends abi?"
Some people had gotten married before graduation and some after graduation and their comments weren't surprising to me. As much as I hated Damba, seeing his face gave me newly found hope. Maybe because I wanted to work hard, earn money, look for him and teach him a lesson.
Someone sent a contact to the group. It said: "Baba Ayo Landlord." Daddy Ayo.
"Thank you." I texted.
"Why did you send her that contact now?"
"You people are just so mean and I thought of helping her." The girl said.
"Why didn't you help her with your house instead?"
I texted the girl privately. "Thank you."
"You're welcome."
"So will you...?" I was typing when she said.
"Whatever you're typing I don't care. You've thanked me and that's it. I don't want to have anything to do with you."
I deleted the half-typed text and decided to call the so called Baba Ayo Landlord.
