Chapter Twenty Four.

Rachel’s P.O.V.

I awoke back in my and Tate’s room dressed in one of his oversized white T-shirts and my lacy grey underwear. Tate was still fast asleep on the bed beside me with his arms slung around my waist and his head buried in my neck. Groaning, I slowly managed to sit up without waking him and ran a hand through my tangled mess of dirty blonde hair. Glancing across the room, I found that Holden’s crib was empty which meant Harper was still babysitting. With a sigh I threw my legs over the edge of the bed and stood up, stumbling a bit but my grip on the nightstand steadied me. My fingers gripped the wood along with a folded piece of paper with my name scribbled on it in black cursive writing.

Reaching to pick it up, I found that my arms were heavily bandaged and that my back was still in dull pain. Opening the letter, I was met with more writing, instructing me to a clearing further into the woods where Reese, Luke and Alec would be waiting. Glancing at Tate, I tossed the letter in the garbage can by the desk and slowly crept my way out of the room. My bare feet carried me down the halls and staircases, leading me to the front yard and around back, deep into the forest. It was still dark out but it was getting lighter with each passing minute due to the sun starting to rise over the horizon. I staggered into a clearing, clinging to the base of a tree to steady myself.

‘About time’ Alec’s voice sneered in my mind causing me to take in my surroundings. Alec was leaning up against a nearby tree while Luke sat on a fallen tree trunk and Reese stood with arms crossed sternly over his chest.

‘Well good morning to you to, Alec’ I shot back over the mind link earning a full-fledged grin from Luke who in turn earned himself a death glare from Alec.

‘Enough-.’ Reese said before Alec could retort something snarky back at me, noticing that the conversation could have taken a wrong turn and instead steered it off topic.

‘Agreed, what’s the reason for calling this meeting?’ I asked ignoring Alec’s snort as I waited for Reese to answer me. My body left like it was being invaded since I could feel, sense and hear all of their emotions. Luke’s amusement, Alec’s irritation and Reese’s stern demeanour.

‘As you all know, Braxton’s trying to take over the States’ Reese explained as I thought back to Braxton’s words from the night before. Luke tensed ‘That’s why he joined the Raptors, huh?’ Reese nodded, turning his eyes from Luke to Alec when Alec spoke up through the link ‘That bastard, using the Raptors to take control then enslaving Reign and his pack himself!’ shaking my head, I stepped into the clearing, heading towards where Luke was seated to lean against the tree trunk beside him.

‘He’s smart, why go through all of the trouble to do it himself when he could get someone to do it for him’ Alec growled lowly, sending a wave of anger and rage through the bond, causing Luke to flinch as Reese and I stiffened.

‘So what, he’s just going to use us to take care of the Raptors when he’s done using them?’ Luke bowed his head, hiding behind the shadows the forest played out across his features.

‘We’re his pawns’ I scoffed turning my head to stare at the horizon where the sun was just starting to rise ‘We’re his war toys’ Alec banged his fist into the tree he was leaning against and turned his back on us to try and hide his hurt but the bond couldn’t hide anything between us.

‘Weapons, is that all he sees us as? His secret weapons when the war gets tough?’ Alec demanded and I pushed off the tree trunk, taking a step towards him but stopped when his back tensed.

‘Alec-.’ I began but he cut me off, shaking his head in disbelief ‘No, it’s not true, he cares about us, he-.’ Reese’s eyes landed on our younger brother who refused to believe any of it and being the oldest, Reese took it upon himself to break the news.
