*Kellin's POV*
Her heartbeat.
The monitor beeping.
Those were the only things keeping me afloat right now. I needed her to wake up, but, she still hasn't. So, I had to be okay with just the fact of seeing her breathing, of knowing that she wasn't lying in a body bag.
That she was alive.
Kyle was the one who was dead. I talked to the police, and turns out, they shot him as soon as they barged in, because he was holding a gun to Cassie's face, and wouldn't drop it, so they had no choice but to shoot and kill him.
I didn't feel a single ounce of guilt, either. I'm glad he was gone. He brought nothing but trouble to this world, and now less evil is in the world because he's gone. And, that was something to be thankful for.
But, what I wasn't happy about was that before they shot him, he hit Cassie with the gun, and knocked her out, giving her a major concussion which resulted in her lying on this hospital bed, unconscious.
"How's our girl holding up?"
I looked up from Cassie to see Rebecca standing in the doorway. She looked so sad, but happy at the same time. I didn't know how to take that.
"She's the same as she was yesterday." I said, looking back down at my girl, squeezing her hand.
"I'm so glad you two finally got together, Kellin." She came up behind me and brushed my hair.
I sighed, letting myself relax at her touch. Rebecca always knew how to make me feel better. She hadn't always been the greatest mother, but she had one of the best hearts. When her husband left her and Cassie, she closed herself off to everyone in depression, and that's why Cassie got so close to her grandparents. But, when they were taken away from her too, Rebecca knew she had to be the mother Cassie needed. So, they became best friends over the years.
I just nodded to what Rebecca had said and replied, "Me too."
"I always knew you were in love with her."
I shifted myself in my seat so that I could see Rebecca's face. She was just smilng a sad smile, but a smile, nonetheless. It kind of eased my pain a little to see her smiling, and that made me smile too.
"Really? It even took me a while to figure it out." I replied honestly.
"I know, but what matters is that you figured it out. And, so did she."
I smiled at that, remembering our last phone call.
I was driving as fast as I could legally, when I heard my phone ring. Of course I started frantically searching for my phone, because it could have been Cassie calling me again. The last call that she made to me sounded nothing like her. She wasn't sick, she was in trouble. I knew that she was lying to me as soon the words came out of her mouth, and that's why I left as soon as I got the call.
I finally found my phone to see that it was indeed Cassie. I answered it so quickly that I almost gave myself whiplash from searching for it.
"Hello? Baby? Where are you? Are you okay?" I spoke frantically into the phone.
What she said next surprised me like no other. Instead of answering any of my questions, she said the three words I had been longing for her to say for the longest time.
"I love you, Kellin."
My heart ached at those words, but instead of being so happy and relieved to hear her finally say them to me, all I could focus on was that she was crying, and I could tell she how much pain was in... And that physically hurt me.
