"Cedric?" I uttered as I descended the steps from the girls dorm. He was sitting near the fireplace, twiddling his thumbs against the empty glass of pumpkin juice in his hands. "Yes, love?"

I smiled warmly as I crawled over to sit next to him on the couch then placed a soft kiss on his cheek. He was gazing at the fire in thought and appeared somewhat nervous.

"Well, I didn't really know how to ask you this." He chuckled as I noticed his cheeks tint slightly red. I raised an eyebrow, urging him to go on.

"You can tell me anything." I grinned once more then placed a second kiss on the same cheek. His mouth twisted up into a smile as he turned his head, bent it low, and pecked me on the lips.

"I was just wondering..." He reached down and intertwined our fingers. "If you'd like to spend Christmas with me? I want you to meet my family." My eyes widened with surprise as I stared at Cedric. I'd never done this whole 'girlfriend' thing before, and I had completely forgotten how much it meant to him that I met his parents.

"I'll have to ask my mom." I smiled, hiding the blush that was forming on my cheeks. "But I would be honored to meet your family, Cedric." My heart jumped with excitement. Were we moving too quick? I didn't think so. I liked Cedric, and he made me happy. He was there when I missed my grandfather and he was there all the times I didn't feel okay.

Cedric nodded his head with a laugh then cupped my face with both his hands before placing another long and soft kiss to my lips. I felt my face heat up with excitement and butterflies. I was going to meet his parents.

My mother knew I was dating Cedric. At first, she was a little freaked out that I was dating a 16 year old boy, but her tensions eased when I sent her a photo of Cedric and I, celebrating my 14th birthday. My mother had told me he seemed like an incredibly sweet boy. And that was all it took.

I was going to write her another letter soon, one just before exams and winter break. But I ended up receiving one from her first in the Great Hall one day as I sat next to Cedric and studied for my classes. The owl dropped the letter in my hands then flew off. I stared at the envelope confused then smiled widely as I recognized my mother's familiar handwriting.

"It's my mom," I told Cedric, still feeling somewhat confused. She wrote to me all the time but the last time she sent me a letter was only a few days ago. Cedric watched me as I tore open the envelope and began reading it. As I scanned the words I felt my heart plummet with shock, tears coated my vision.
