By 12pm the next day, Ava and I were pacing in my bedroom. She'd just peed on the two Clear Blue sticks we'd driven 2 HOURS to buy. Yeah, my car-sickness didn't appreciate that. Luckily we bought some pills at the drug store before making our way back.
I didn't understand how people could actually live so far from civilization, it was weird.
"What if it's not accurate? We should've bought more, " she nervously bit her nails as she continued overthinking.
"That's exactly why we bought three," I pointed to the third test laying on my bed. "If the answers are different on both then we'll get the third one out of the box," I tried to reason with her but I was equally as jittery.
She looked at the doorknob that opened into the adjoined bathroom. "Yeah."
We'd decided to wait ten minutes to see the results.
They dragged on forever. The only thing worse than spending those ten minutes pacing my room would've been if I was running.
But then Ava's phone timer went off and we both looked at one another. She pursed her lips and I saw fear in her eyes.
Before she opened the door I spoke softly, "Everything happens for a reason, babe."
A small grin appeared on her face, "I know."
She walked in, me behind her. She grabbed both sticks and read them, and she squeezed her eyes shut as her chest shook. Silent tears made their way down her cheeks and dripped onto the floor after reaching the tip of her chin.
She couldn't speak, so I just held her as she gripped the two sticks and held them up to my face so I could see her results.
Two pink positive signs were clearly displayed.
I held her head against my neck as she cried silently.
Yesterday, she had admitted to herself that there was a possibility, a big possibility but these tests told her it was more than a mere possibility; it was a reality now.
Ava loved trying new things and living for herself, but I was sure her badass nature would help her be a badass mother. She would be okay, and I told her exactly that.
Her cries became sniffles as we both sat on the bathroom floor. I handed her some toilet paper so she could blow her nose.
"I'm scared," was all she got out before tears fell from her eyes once more.
My tears followed hers, "You're allowed to be scared but before you fill your head with nonsense, you need to understand that you will not be alone trough this. I love you and I will be here to help you through it all. But you don't only have me, you have Mikael. I may not know him but I have eyes. I also see the way he looks at you, like you're the last woman on this planet and the only one who he lives for. When you're in pain, so is he. And I'm sure your happiness brings him pure joy, and that is not so easy to find. You are lucky to have him by your side," I finish with a smile, "but luckier to have me too."
She chuckles despite her glassy eyes. "I really am." We sat in silence for a few minutes, but Dev's loud voice eventually rumbled through the house.
"LUNCH IS SERRRRVEDD FLOWER. COME DOWN BEFORE I GET YOU OR YOUR BOYFRIEND DOES."
I rolled my eyes at Devon's idiocy before laughing with Ava. I didn't doubt that Kol would come up since I hadn't seen him since last night and he was probably going to make sure I didn't skip any meals for the next week. So we got up and we splashed some water on our faces before Ava headed off to talk to Mikael, with the tests in hand, and I walked down for lunch.
