"YOU RAN INTO A BURNING BUILDING?!"
"YOU RAN INTO A BURNING BUILDING?!"Bakugo and Midoriya both said with distress. Not this again. She was less insulted hearing the plea from them than she did from Endeavor. Endeavor knew what she was capable of. Midoriya and Bakugo didn't. To them, she could have just seemed like any normal citizen.
Bakugo suddenly looked really annoyed and hit Midoriya's arm.
"That's for copying what I said, nerd!"
Arya rubbed her temples. As if the nurse read her mind, she returned with a pain pill and a cup of water. Arya grabbed it and quickly swallowed the pill.
She heard Hawks chuckle from behind her, and chose to ignore it.
She waved her hand out at them. "Like you both wouldn't have done the same thing. Tell me I'm wrong."
They both stared at her, thought about it. Midoriya turned to Bakugo. "I think she's got a point, Kacchan." He just shhed him back.
"Look, it wasn't a rescue mission. There aren't many tenants that live in my building, and it was the middle of a weekday. I knew no one else was home. I had a lot of important things in that apartment." She explained. "But the thing is, once I got into the apartment, I realized it wasn't a normal fire. The flames were entirely blue."
She tried to choose her words carefully. She didn't want to lie to them, but it also didn't seem right to tell them the whole truth. Plus that also meant exploiting Endeavor and the family's business, including Shoto. This wasn't their battle. "I've never seen anything like it before."
The ringing in her head abruptly got worse.
"Dabi." Bakugo said, his expression cold.
"Yeah." Midoriya added.Surprise ran across Arya's face. "What?"
She looked at Endeavor, his eyes darkened. Someone changed in his expression, but it was quickly masked. He just continued to look at the floor.
"It sounds like Dabi, yeah." Hawks said.
She turned to look at him, and shot him a questioning look, waiting for someone to explain.
"Will someone tell me what's going on? Who's Dabi?"
There was an eerie silence, like no one wanted to speak up about it. It felt like all she could hear was her own heartbeat in her head. What did they give me the slow release shit?
"He's a member of the League of Villains. Not much is known about him, but his quirk does have to do with blue flame. It wouldn't be a surprise to him just burning down buildings."
"He's burnt down whole forests." Midoriya interjected, he glanced at Bakugo who didn't add anything else. He just stood there with his arms crossed like he wasn't listening.
Arya glanced at Endeavor again, he was being really quiet. He didn't seem to notice. He was deep in thought, like in a trance."He would have had to be nearby. Did you see anyone?" Hawks said.
Arya shook her head. "No. I wasn't able to get that far into my apartment because of the flames. I was suddenly out of the building before I knew it."
"How'd you get out?" Bakugo said after his silence.
"Ummmm....," she started. Suddenly embarrassed to really say. "Well.....I got blown out a window."
Hawks burst out in laughter. Arya turned and glared at him. He slapped a hand over his mouth and his other hand around his stomach trying to contain himself. "Sorry!"
"What?!" Endeavor spoke up finally, out of his trance. Fire safety 101. Yeah yeah, I know I fucked up.
Both Midoriya and Bakugo looked a little stuned too, but they didn't speak up about it. They just kind of waited for an explanation.
"Look, I know, okay. I kicked a door in, the rush of oxygen caused especially a mini explosion inside the apartment. It blew all the windows out, I just so happened to be standing next to one." She held up her forearms for them too see. "I got burns on my arms from protecting my face. I hit my head as I fell, and I got a couple other bruises and road rash."
Hawks let out another howl of laughter. It was like he wasn't even trying.
"Hawks!" Endeavor yelled.
That's it!
Arya turned toward Hawks, stepped in front of him, shoving him against wall with her arm outstretched. He still chuckled, making eye contact with her.
"You want the tell the rest of us what you find so funny, pretty boy?"
Hawks giggled at that, never losing eye contact. His eyes darkened as he stared at her. She had never touched him before. The shirt he was wearing was loose but she could feel his chest muscles from holding him pressed against the wall. For a second, she almost wanted to squeeze. His energy was so intense, it was almost like she didn't have to really touch him feel it.
"You think I'm pretty?" He said smiling.
This asshole! She took back any possibly nice thing she could have thought in that moment.
"Meh!" She said back, shoving him again, not as hard this time. She suddenly remembered that they had an audience. Endeavor was now the one trying to hold back a laugh.
He winced, dropping his smile. "Easy kid, the wings." His tone became very serious.
He raised his wings up outstretched, one almost hitting Endeavor. Clearly, an attempt at a dominant display.
She looked at his wings, already pressed firmly against the wall behind him. His wings were so beautiful, they seemed to turn almost Scarlett. Did they darken from his anger, could they do that? She couldn't remember exactly if they were that same shade when they first met.
She gave him a playful look, trying to show she wasn't afraid of him, and gave another light push. Definitely not as hard as the first two. Hawks winced again, and seemed to loose his breath.
Midoriya and Bakugo looked at each other questioningly, then back at them. They were skeptical of what they just witnessed. This person who All Might had just described as kind and helpful just stood up to the #2 hero. As far as they knew, they had only just met each other.
"Okay, okay." Hawks said, holding his hands up, like surrender. "I'm sorry, I have a habit of laughing at the worst possible times. Dabi is a villain. I've run into him a couple times over the last several months. He does destructive things all the time just for the fuck of it, yeah." He spoke in a calming tone this time, still serious. "But this, seems kind of personal." He placed his hand over Arya's that was still pressed against his chest. Shit. My gloves. Hawks wasn't wearing any gloves either. He curled his fingers under hers like to hold her hand. His thumb moves slowly over top. "Don't you think?"
She couldn't help the first shaky breath, almost a gasp. His energy calmed her almost immediately. Whatever anger she had toward him seemed to vanish, as well as the pounding in her head. He was warm and she could not sense any mal intent, yet had the slightest hint of unease and tension. But his eyes. The pupils had shrunk to slits as they held eye contact.
What the fuck is he doing to me?
Her hands are so cold.
Were her eyes always that color? They were like honey before.
So, the league wants her huh?
I wonder what her quirk is anyway.
She heard his thoughts as if they were spoken out loud. And with that, she was shaken out of whatever trance that was.
His expression remained calm and collected. But what she felt from him and the way he was looking at her, it was not entirely the case. She pulled her hand away from his, releasing him from against the wall. Feeling suddenly empty.
"None of your business."
