ɢᴏᴏᴅʙʏᴇs are always hard, especially when it comes to the Doctor, so what's a better goodbye present than a new house they've always wanted and the car Rory's been dreaming of for a very long time. Somehow, that makes it harder for his companions who know that such extravagance is a symptom of guilt as he's prepared to take his final bow, the curtains ready to fall and cut the stage off from the adoring audience.
Kate watches his goodbye to Amy from the doors of the TARDIS. She can't go yet, he claims, there's too much left for them to do. Somehow, he's not scared of Kate dying, or if he is, he isn't very good at showing it. He is scared, however, that if he leaves her for too long she'll fall out of love with him despite it being very against the golden rules of soulmates created in the stars.
"It can't happen like this." Amy pushes herself up from Rory's new red car, forcing the Doctor to stop from where he had been close enough for Kate to reach out and touch. "After everything we've been through, Doctor, everything, you can't just drop me off at my house and say goodbye like we've shared a cab."
But he can, because that's easier than saying goodbye to a dead body.
"And what's the alternative?" counters the Doctor, towering over his redheaded companion who's close to tears. Kate's heart lurches at the sight. She's going to travel through space and time without Amy for the first time since they've joined the Doctor, it pains her to even think about it. "Me standing over your grave? Over your broken body? Over Rory's body?"
After their teary hug, the Doctor steps back to give Kate the space to meet her best friend in the middle of the road for their own shaky goodbyes. The two women have travelled to the ends of the universe and back again and have never had to say goodbye, not once, not even when Kate was being taken by the light did they find time to say cheerio to one another.
This time makes it all feel too real.
"I'll really miss you," Kate breathes out, arms wrapped around Amy's neck in a tight hug. Her best friend holds her waist, both of them sinking into the last hug they'll share for a very long time. All those years of living together, travelling together, doing almost everything together hasn't prepared them for this moment.
