Echos in the Dark

Chapter 21

The sun was setting and Maggie was already coming back with Lori on her back. Rick had asked her to get her and to tell the group to come here. Daphne was awake once again talking with her brothers while Carl and Ace colored with Cass.

"How're you feeling?"

"Sam, don't treat me like a patient who just woke from a coma." I said. He sighed. "But, if it makes you feel better, I didn't see the light." I grinned. No one else did. "Sheesh, what a crowd." I muttered before looking back at the ceiling.

"Who's Daryl?" I heard Dean asked. I turned my head to him and raised a brow.

"How do you know him?"

"Shane mentioned him. Said that he's going to kill them." I thought about Daryl and him finding out about this.

"Maybe, maybe not."

"He's not another Angel right?" I looked at my older brother with shocked and offensive look.

"Oh just because I slept with Castiel and had a small relationship with Gabriel doesn't mean I'm sleeping with all the damn angels!" I said before hissing in pain. I inhaled and sighed.

"Look, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it." I looked at him and felt my face soften.

"Yeah, I know. I'm sorry too...cunt." I muttered.

"Asshole." I grinned.

"So what's Cassy doing now?"

"He's coloring with the kids."

"Aw, he's being a child again, how cute. Bring me the pictures he drew, yeah?" I heard Sam and Dean chuckle. And then it became silent. Suddenly I heard humming. I looked over to Dean.

"Are you really singing the Beatles? To me?" He shrugged before humming again. I looked over to Sam with playfully shocked. He joined in too before sitting next to me and holding my other hand.

"Imagine if Bobby saw us now..." I scoffed.

"He would be yelling his ass off." Sam chuckled. I looked back at the ceiling, smiling at the memory I had dreamt of when I was unconscious.

"I was dreaming," I started, it got their attention. "Remember that time we went to the lake?"

"Which time?" I chuckled.

"After my 7th birthday? Dad wasn't home for my birthday but he made it up by taking us fishing?"

"He did?" Sam asked. I looked at him.

"How can you forget? You cried like a girl when I asked you to throw the fish back in the lake."

"Oh yeah!" Dean was laughing.

"I think...I think dad smiled. It could be just my imagination but, I thought I saw dad smiling. I think that was one of the times I ever saw dad smile."

"One of the times?" They asked. I looked at them.

"Yeah, I mean, when he thought no was looking, he would smile. I ended up talking with him, when he's a bit drunk, but- he always did say he was proud of us." That surprised the boys. I heard knocking and we looked to the door to see Lori and Rick. "Lori?"

"Oh my god, Daphne." She came over to me. She had tears in her eyes. "Thank you, thank you so much."

"No problem. Anyone would've done the same. If anything, it would've been a whole lot worse if it were my son or yours on here." I smiled softly. "And the others?" I asked changing the topic.

"Daryl's worried."

"Sounds like him. I'll live not a problem." She smiled and nodded before going back to her husband. "So. Still got those UNO cards in the glove department?" I said looking over to Dean. He smiled.

"I'll go get it."

"Call in Cass and Ace when you get them." He nodded and left me and Sam. I looked over to him.

"How are you doing?"

"I'm fine. Just-" he sighed.

"Yeah, not exactly 'new year new me'." I said. He chuckled.

"Yeah..." I heard footsteps and looked over to see Dean and Hershel with Otis' wife. I raised a brow.

"More blood?" Hershel nodded. I sighed.

"Guess UNO will just gotta wait. Why don't you teach Cass how to play?" I looked over to Sam. He seem hesitant but got up and leaving.

"We need to take off your shirt, it's in the way." Hershel said. My shirt?

"Whoa whoa whoa-"

"Dean. It's fine." I turned to Hershel.

"Can I sit up or do you have to cut it?"

"I'll have to cut it."

"Aw. Okay." He looked at the woman and nodded at her. She came to me with scissors in hand.

"Excuse me." She said.

"You're good."
