Paul punched the elevator button looking back in the direction of the conference room, waiting to see if you would follow after him. He had finally reached his breaking point, and though it hurt, he would adjust to life without you. Paul sighed as the door opened, and you still had not come out of the conference room to join him.
"Nothing can be fucking simple," He mumbled as he pressed the button for the bottom floor.
After a few minutes, the doors opened again to the bottom floor, and Paul darted off, heading to the rental car. His mind was racing, trying to figure out how he would explain to Evan that you weren't going to be coming back home if that was the choice you made. The little boy loved you as much as Paul did, and it was a heartbreaking realization.
Paul flung the door open to his car and pulled his sunglasses down over his eyes as tears started streaming down his face. He leaned his head into the steering wheel of the car, trying to control his breathing and stifle the sobbing. This was supposed to be the last relationship for him, and again someone else had stepped in and possibly demolished it for the two of you.
After five minutes, Paul pulled his head away from the steering wheel and looked back at the hospital entrance, checking one more time to see if you were walking out. He sighed as again you were nowhere to be found and pulled the car out of the parking lot heading back to the hotel to wait for your final answer.
---------------------
You stared at the door in shock that Paul had just stormed out, leaving you with your mom and an ultimatum. You understood he had reached his breaking point and were surprised it didn't happen sooner, but having to pick between him and your family was hard. You sat down in a chair next to the door, trying to collect your thoughts and wipe the tears from your face, as you waited to see if Paul would come back in the room.
Your mind went straight to your dad and what he would tell you to do with the madness going on with your mother and brother. Your old man always told you to follow your heart and not your mind, especially after being diagnosed with anxiety at seventeen. You loved Paul without a doubt, and life in California with him and little Evan had been the happiest you had been in the three years. No screaming or worrying if you were going to get hit in the face if you said and did something wrong. Paul was willing to move the earth for you, and your family was ready to crush you with. You wiped the tears off of your face as you stood up and headed toward the door.
"Fuck this," You said as you walked back toward your mom's room.
You took a deep breath before shoving the door open, watching her jump as it crashed into the wall. You slammed it shut quickly before you went and stood in front of her, hoping to be able to keep the courage and tell her what was on your mind.
"Where the fuck did you go?" She asked
"I went to go and try to calm my boyfriend down because of you, mom," You replied
"If he can't take a little.." She started
"No, you shut your mouth and listen now! I'm done with the two of you, mom. If you want Jake out of jail, then you and Melissa put your two little brains together and figure it out. As far as I'm concerned, he can go on to prison because he fucking deserves it with everything he's done. You're not getting any more money from Paul or me. Once you're done here, that's it. I'll always love you because you're my mom, but it's clear that you only love me when you see some dollar bills." you told her.
"Oh, come on, Y/N, what has that man been putting in your head? You're the oldest; this is what you're supposed to do!!! I did it for my mom. That's what is expected from the women, so stop with all this better than everyone else's attitude." She said.
"Goodbye, mom, I hope you find whatever it is that you are looking for."
"You stupid bitch, get back in here!" She screamed.
You chuckled and shook your head as you walked toward the door, hearing her struggling to try and get out of bed. Paul's point was proven for the final time in this situation. You headed toward the elevator, hearing her screams echoing down the hall. You hoped Paul would still be at the hotel and not on the plane heading back to California without you.
