'If a star fell for every time I thought of you, the sky would be empty.'
Mike sat up and wiped his tears, running his fingers through his unruly chocolate-brown curls. He glanced at his phone, smiling at the sight of the image displayed in front of him. It was a picture of a certain brunette kissing his cheek whilst he had a cheeky grin plastered on his freckled-face.
Mike hesitantly pushed his finger against the screen, selecting 'accept' before placing the phone back on the bed, making sure the camera is facing the ceiling so that Eleanor didn't have to see him cry.
"Hey Mike!", a voice beamed from the other side of the line.
Mike leaned forward just enough to look at his girlfriend's cute little face. She was in her pajamas, her stomach pressed against the duvet of her bed, her hair up in a messy bun as she smiled widely at the camera.
"Hi E-El", Mike sniffled, biting his lip trying his hardest not to cry.
Eleanor's smile turned into a frown the minute she heard Mike's voice from the other side of the line. She could tell he was crying by the sound of his voice. She could also tell it was because of his parents. Again. This wasn't the first time Mike cried to Eleanor after arguing with his parents over dinner. In fact, it almost happened every night and sometimes it was so worse that Eleanor had to sneak into his house in the middle of the night to stop him from hurting himself.
"Mike?"
"Yeah, El?"
"I wanna see you. Please.", she begged, her voice starting to crack.
Mike picked up the phone, holding it close to his face. Eleanor flinched at the sight of his boyfriend. His eyes were red and puffy from crying. His curls were messier than usual and his cheeks were tear-stained.
"Was it- was it your pare-"
"yes."
"Mike, I think you should forgive them and move on."
Eleanor could see the anger starting to form in Mike's eyes. He looked like he was about to explode.
"Move on?! After what happened that night, you expect me to move on?!", he yelled, tears rolling down his burning cheeks.
"What happened?", Eleanor asked hesitantly, not wanting to push him off the comfort zone.
"One Night, when I was 10.", he began, swallowing the lump in his throat. "My mom was pregnant with Holly. She went into labor in the middle of the night, and my dad took her to the hospital.", he paused trying to find the right words.
"What you should also know is that my dad had invited his work friends over for New year's eve and that he forgot to lock the door when he left and Nancy and I didn't even know they weren't home. My dad's work friends came home,", he sobbed before continuing, "They found Nancy and decided to take advantage of her. I tried El, I tried to stop them."
"Mike.", Eleanor whimpered from the other side of the line, feeling sorry for her boyfriend.
"But the worst part is that my dad didn't do anything about it claiming that 'it would ruin our reputation'. And he blamed Nancy for everything that happened.", he bit his lip trying to hold back his sobs.
"And to this day, he doesn't know it's affecting me so badly. All tho-those ni-nightmares.", he hiccuped, looking down at his lap.
"I'm so sorry, Mike.", Eleanor whispered, her eyes starting to tear up.
"Why are you apologizing? It's not your fault, It's mine.", Mike blurted out making Eleanor's eyes go wide.
"Mike, it's not your fault.", she tried to assure but Mike just stayed quiet, starring down at his lap.
"Baby, look at me", Eleanor sighed. Mike looked up sniffling, locking his chocolate orbs with the honey ones.
"You have to trust me when I say it's not your fault, okay? It's gonna be okay. I promise."
"Okay", he said, not fully convinced yet.
"Now can you try and get some rest for me? Please.", Eleanor pleaded from the other side of the line.
Mike nodded before saying, "C-can you stay o-on call until I-I fall asleep?", he sniffled, his voice cracking terribly.
"Of course.", Eleanor smiled sweetly.
Mike let his head fall against the pillow, slipping into the duvet and laying his phone next to him.
"Night, Mike.", Eleanor said, flicking the lights off.
"Night, E-El."
Eventually, Eleanor heard Mike's breath even meaning that he was asleep. She ended the call before breaking down in tears. 'How could they do this to him', she thought. She hated seeing Mike like this. She just wished she could take all the pain away forever. But that particular incident seemed to have left a deep scar in Mike's life. There was nothing she could do about it. Or maybe there was. That is when Eleanor came up with the perfect idea to cheer her boyfriend up.
'He's gonna love it', she thought smiling to herself.
