Emma and I ended up talking about Nathan for the rest of the lesson, even though I didn’t really know what I could tell her, I didn’t know whether I should mention the angel thing, and even if I did I’m pretty sure that she would think I was crazy.
But of course Emma, being all… Emma… she knew that something was up.
‘Myth, what’s up?’
‘Not much really, what about you?’ I topped with a cheesy smile.
‘Myth I’m being serious, something is up, come on, I’m your best friend, you can tell me anything’. She said in an almost hypnotic way.
‘…’ I didn’t know what to say, if I told her the truth she might think I was crazy and not talk to me again, but I didn’t really know how to get out of this without making it seem that I didn’t trust her.
She was my best friend, and I hated keeping secrets from her, maybe it would be OK if I told her.
She wouldn’t say anything, and even if she did they wouldn’t believe her.
OK maybe I should tell her, it would be nice if I had someone to talk about this to anyway.
I opened my mouth to come clean, just when the bell rang. Stuff like that happens a lot to me. Emma jumped up and headed to the door.
‘OK, we are not finished with this, I’ll talk to you at lunch or something, it’s just I can’t risk another warning for being late to class. One more and I get a detention’, she finished with a little shiver supposedly going up her spine at the thought of a detention.
I was quite surprised that Emma even knew what a detention was, with her near immaculate reputation.
‘I understand’, I said with my English posh voice and a nod of approval at her departure.
I stayed for another few minutes before heading off to my second lesson, I had P.E. now, and even though I loved P.E. and tried really hard I still didn’t get very good grades for it. My teacher just doesn’t understand that I’m not built for sport.
Still I hurried off to class trying to make up for lost time.
Volleyball… volleyball. Yes you heard correctly… volleyball. My all-time, number one, unprecedented, best, LEAST FAVOURITE SPORT IN THE ENTIRE WORLD!!!!
Not only was I absolutely terrible at volleyball but we were also starting a four week course on it… and just to top it off it would be worth 70 precent of our mark. What a perfect add to an already perfect day. Not.
I was hoping that I would be put in a group with all the really good players, and they would just make me stand at the back and… hopefully… make me look good too.
We were put in groups of four. My group included, James, a really sporty person that was good at games like this, Charlie, a girl that was really tall but was really shy and not very strong, Calum, a chubby kid that always seemed to be out of breath, and then there was me, little, not so old, uncoordinated, me.
Somehow our winning at the game king court didn’t seem very likely… hmm… I wonder why.
James started the serve; he threw it up really high and then smacked it straight down to the floor over the net. Oh my gosh he was so strong. The opposing team didn’t even flinch it was so fast.
Before I knew it the score was 10-1, James accidently hit the ball out of court. This meant that it was my serve, not only did I hate serving; I barely even knew how to serve.
I attentively placed the ball in my left hand and started swinging my right hand backwards and forwards.
‘We haven’t got all day you know’, a voice from the other side of the net came over.
‘Eager to loose are you?’ Came James’ strong deep voice.
‘Yeah, like we would lose to a girl.’
He started muttering to his little ‘buddies’ after that so I thought that it would be a perfect time to hit the ball, after all my only real chances of winning this point was to get them while they were distracted.
I quickly hit the ball; it was almost as if everything went into slow motion. It drifted over our half of the court and then floated over the net. ‘YES’! I mentally screamed.
It started to fall but it was aiming right towards one of the players on the other team.
Before I knew it he was curled up on the floor with his mates crowding around him, and James was partly celebrating and gesturing me to hi-five him. Shit!... I just hit him in the nuts.
Half of the room had erupted in soft laughter, while the other was feeling his pain.
I clasped my hand over my mouth right after I yelled out, ‘Still think you would lose to a girl’.
On one hand I was a bit embarrassed because of the people staring at me in shock, … but one the other hand I was pretty proud of myself.
There was really no reason to deny it, I was a really strong feminist, and that meant that if you mess with me, you will pay.
There was a tapping on my shoulder so I spun around to see Mrs Robinson, ‘Care to explain yourself’.
‘Um… well… you see… ‘
“Did you do that on purpose?’
‘Ha, like my aim is that good, I was surprised that I even got it over the net.’
‘OK, well, make sure it doesn’t happen again.’ She strutted off to go and see the bloke on the floor.
That was when I thought that it would be a good time to get a drink.
The water had a bit of a metallic taste to it, I sipped at it for a while then turned to see James leaning on the wall in a not-so-casual position grinning at me.
What the Fuuuu…
