He unravelled it and two wing like objects sprang free.
They looked really quite small, but then they folded out and showed their full size.
They were a whitey colour that shone in the sun, they were rather thin and attached along the back of his spine.
I slowly stood up and walked towards him with caution. The idea of this being a joke flew out the window when I saw them up close.
As I walked around the back of him he flapped his wings and a gush of wind hit my face.
I had never seen anything like it before, it wasn’t like what they showed in movies they weren’t as big and they definitely weren’t covered in feathers.
I managed to stammer out a small string of words in my shock.
‘… Do… I… h… have them?’
‘You can get them… if you want them.’
‘…’
‘You just need to get a kind of… blessing from the elders and then between a week and a month later… you have them.’
‘So… do you like… go around… helping people.’
‘Yes, you go off on… missions, I guess, and… well… you help people.’
‘What do they need help with?’
‘Lots of things, we tend to help people that have metal problems... depression, anorexia that sort of thing.
We make them better, the more time we spend together, the better they get.’
‘How do you know they need help?’
‘We can… read minds.’
I couldn’t help weird thoughts entering my brain, and Nathan must have known I was a little self-conscious about the whole thing.
‘No, it’s OK I can’t read your mind. That was another indication that you were one of us. We can’t read each other’s mind.’
I thought for a second, the whole situa6ion was finally dawning on me, I felt a little light headed. I went over and sat on a log to think.
Nathan pushed off the ground and flew towards me, he looked like an angel, heck he was one!
‘Now I know this might not be the best time to ask you, but I kinda need you to come to the elders with me.’
‘What! No! Just… let me think.’
‘There’s not much time to think, I’ve already kept you too long.
They’ll start asking questions… and it won’t be good.
They might have my wings for it. They wanted you yesterday.’
‘I’m not a thing, they can’t just have me.’
‘Look there’s things you don’t understand; you might not fully understand them for a while.
But in the mean time I really need you to come with me.’
‘No!’
‘Look if you don’t come with me now, I’m going to have to… force you to.’
I thought for a second, but who was he to think that he owned me, no, I wasn’t going to go with him.
I was taking a stand, metaphorically that is.
I shook my head and folded my arms as he ran his fingers through his hair just before he leaned in a gave me a quick peck on the lips.
