Chapter Twenty Three

Mrs Adetoun's POV

I'm a wife and a mother but I'm first a woman, so I understand the fact that Dara is not happy and even though she's in a state of shock, I don't want her hating her father. How I wish I could turn back the hands of time and talk my husband out of his stupid idea, instead of adding coal to the fire. I was startled when I hear my phone ring and was even suprised when I realized it was Dara calling. I composed myself and picked up the call at the second ring.

"Darasimi, how are you feeling?" I asked her with concern

"To be sincere mum, I'm feeling like your husband just sent me to a journey of no return but I'll be fine. But why mum? Why didn't you warn me when I called you?" She asked

I sighed and replied a bit hesitant,

"I'm sorry honey. I just want you to know that we love you and we couldn't afford to let you pass through certain things we passed through. You might not believe it, but Raymond loves you"

"Why are you always on dad's side, even when we both know that what he's doing isn't right?" She asked

My husband collected the phone from me and I burst into tears. I had forgotten he's here with me.

Darasimi omo mi(my child),if only you know that I would give up the whole world for you. Oh, I'm such a disgrace!

"Wuraola, I don't understand you again o. Weren't you in support of our daughter marrying the young man in the first place, so what changed?" he asked as he sat beside me

"Kunle, I'm first a woman before being a wife and a mother. I can see our daughter's pain even though she tried so hard not to show it. She doesn't love this young man. Jo oko mi (please my husband), don't let us put her in shackles that'll make her unhappy for the rest of her life." I knelt down and begged him as I keep soaking myself with tears

He sighed as he draw me to himself,
"Wura mi, you know I don't like seeing you in tears cause it breaks my heart seeing the one I love shedding tears which are not of joy but you see on this note, there's nothing I can do. I've already signed the deal and it's all over the news that Dara is getting married to Raymond. So, my hands are tight"

"Kunle, when did you become so power hungry? When did your tummy become a bottomless pit that nothing can satisfy but fame, money and power? Truly your fore-fathers worked so hard to build this company but then, do you think they'll be happy with your decision right now? Kunle, don't destroy your home for the sake of a stupid contract because I can't see in you the man I married. You're a different Adetoun.

The last few weeks I spent with Dara is a eye opener for me as a mother in seeing where I was getting it wrong. See, if anything should happen to her, I won't forgive you and generations after you." I said to him in anger and left for the bedroom.

Sarah's POV

(Sarah is seen moving around the sitting room)

Hmm, Mr Adetoun is such a good father not only to Dara but to everyone else around him. So what changed? What could turn a caring father into a beast all of a sudden? The desire to have more money or what? Oh Lord, please come and shed light on this issue and make every crooked way straight. Amen

"Sarah, what were you thinking about that much that you didn't even realize I've been calling you?" she shouted in her ears

"Oh dear, you startled me! What's with the noise though?"

"Ehn, I know. But tell me what were you thinking that made you forget yourself like that?" She asked me with concern

"I was just thinking how all of a sudden your dad changed. I mean he has always been a caring father to us all but then, all these happened which made me left me baffled if he's still the one we know" I replied

She sighed as she replied,
"Dear, I perfectly understand you. But well, people change either for good or bad, I can't be the judge of that. But you know he's still my dad even though his decisions hurt me. All we have to do is to keep praying for him"

"But honey, what do you want to do now?" I asked her as I went to sit beside her

"Oh that!" She said with a bit of hesistance and then continued,
"I've decided to get married to Raymond"

"What??? Darasimi, are you kidding me right now?" I asked as I jumped from the chair. It was as if it was set on fire

But when I saw her face I knew she wasn't joking and I needed to calm down so I don't add to the issue on ground. I take hold of her hands, bend down to her level and said to her gently

"Honey, you can't do this to yourself. None of us wants this and even though there seems to be no way right now, help will surely come"

But lo and behold, my words were foreign in her ears because she has already made up her mind.
